Drop Tranny to fix leaky oil pan??

Hey fellas! It's been a while since I've been around. My '02 is long gone, but my son still has his, and he has a situation that I need your advice on.

He has a leaky oil pan. The leak is towards the rear, and is throwing oil all over the rear of the engine and transmission. The local shop where our family does all of their service has told him that the transmission must be dropped in order to drop the pan. In addition he recommends replacing the seals while the pan and transmission are down. To perform this service along with a transmission drain and filter change, he wants around $950.00. I was wondering if this is the correct procedure to fix the problem, if you think it's a fair price.

Hope you all are doing well. I miss the '02....sometimes. especially taking the long hills up here in New England. I replaced it with an 07 Tahoe, and it doesn't have near the power or fuel mileage that the old girl gave me. Thanks and see you all later.

Are you saying his is a 02 also ?
The trans does not have to be dropped to remove pan , but you may be not telling us what they think the problem is .
You say leaky oil pan , then near rear , need to know exactly wear the leak is ?
If like you say it near rear , then maybe it has to come out .
Its all in the details , you are giving few if any details to help .
Is it a 4x4 , more work to handle tranfercase , to R&R only [ no other work ] at least $250 .
If it was just the pan , then leave trans in & remove pan .

I had an oil leak on my truck, it was coming from the rear of the pan. I discovered that all of the pan bolts I could check were loose. My Chrysler shop manual indicated the bolts should be torqued to 24nm, 18 foot lbs (216 inch lbs). I managed to get my inch pound wrench on all but 5 of the bolts. Two of them had retainers on them holding the tranny lines; one had some other kind of retainer on it and two were under the cross member. I had to use a standard 10 mm wrench on these. I couldn't figure out how to get the tranny line retainers off, so they haven't been tightened. I'm still contemplating on that. I tightened mine up two weeks ago and so far no leaks. I used my inch pound wrench because it's 4 inches shorter than my lowest setting foot lb. wrench. Just make sure that you hold the wrench correctly so that you don't over-tighten the bolts. It's ok to hold the head of the wrench (neligble effect on torque), just don't hold the extension. Of course I was laying on my back under the truck, so I had to support the head of the wrench to keep it on the fastener.

Thanks for the replys. The truck is a 2002, 2WD. My son will get on here tonight and maybe describe exactly where the leak is. I'm 250 miles away from him, so I can't describe any better. He says the oil is black, not reddish, and is leaking down the very rear of the pan and then it's getting blown all over transmission. Apparently, it's pretty messy at the moment, but you know how a little leak can make a big mess.

Hey all.......it has been a while. But here is the situation

58k on the odometer now
around 40k govenor solenoid replaced!
around 45 k VP 44 replaced (didn't install it right at first and shot diesel fuel all over the engine)
Injection line no2 replaced not long after that (good ol dodge techs couldn't find where a diesel fuel leak was) CUMMINS DID!

Within the past 2 months
New ball joints
New torsion bar
New brakes
new tires.

NOT CHIPS,COMPS,etc! EXCEPT A BHAF

The leak "APPEARS" to be coming from the area between the oil pan and the transmission! Slow leak as some days there is nothing on the driveway!

ALso there is a TON of oil up front on the suspension area! So thick with dirt and road grime it looks like grease now. COuld that be my breather bottle?

Thanks guys! Thanks for any help!

Possibly. I would delete that puke bottle asap. I simply extended the rubber hose down below the axle. You may want to pull your radiator before the summer months to make sure there isn't too much oil blockage. It's hard to see with the fan and shroud in the way. There were a few threads with pictures about this subject last month. You may want to search back a little and read them.

As for the big leak in the back. No ideas here.
