What's this "high idle" thing I keep reading
#2
When cold it will automatically go up to 1000 rpms after running for a minute or so.
With the AT you can have the ECM reflashed so you have a manual high idle (controlled through crusie control buttons)
Turn it on an it jumps to 1000 RPM, an then through the cruise accell button you can raise it to 1100,1200,1300,1400,1500 rpm. Depress brakes and drops back down.

Thanks.
Sounds like a good thing to have done. Especially for warming up the beast in cold weather.
Who does the reflash?
The dealer?
Is a common thing that most/all dealers offer?
Thanks again.
DT.

I'm new to Dodge but I imagine there might be a fee probably under $100.
I'm leaving mine be for now. It will high idle by itself if it needs it. The manual setup is designed for PTO's in chassis cabs I believe.

This reflash only works on 2004 automatic transmission equipped trucks. I had it done because while snowmobiling in New Hampshire this past winter with temps running at -20 the factory high idle of 1000 rpm's did not warm the engine up and I figured 1500 rpm might be a better help. Also, during the summer you can turn on the AC and kick up the high idle which in turn should pull more air over the AC condensor thus cooling the truck down quicker.

Ed is right on the "04's only". I have done this mod to dozens of trucks. I wish it was available for my 01 (using the cruise switches). The ECM has to be updated and then the feature has to be "enabled" using the drb.

Haven't tried on an 04.5. You might just have to enable it with the drb. Either way I'm sure it's available. I did about three snowbirds new trucks a few months back and the news spread like wildfire through the rv parks around here. I was doing quite a few of them for awile.

Big Ed,
The best way to make these trucks warm up is to put something over the gril. Last winter here in Alaska it touched -30F and I had to drive 20 miles before my truck would warm up. Next day installed some Lund cold fronts and it will now warm all the way up in the driveway with the 1000rpm factory high idle.
If I am doing some towing I remove the 2 two plates to give the intercooler some air but when I'm empty I put them back on.
I do a bit of snowmaching myself (that's snowmobiling to your lower 48 crowd) and have a bit of pictures if you care to look at them:
