Do I have this high idle thing
Ok guys been reading alot about this high idle thing. Here is what my truck thats in the sig does. I plug it in most nights below 30 I start it the next morning for 5-10 minutes before I leave for work. After about 2 minutes the truck automatically runs the RPMs to a 1000 and idles there. Now I tried the trick about turning the cruise on and setting the RPMs around 1250 and when I hit the set buton nothing happen. I have had the truck only about 4 months. I am not sure what the orginal owner might have done. Its going to the dealer next week for some warranty work so this would be a good time to get it taken care of. Thanks
sounds like you only have the automatic high idle-(when it is cold outside the idle bumps up.) the manual high idle can be set throught the cruise control buttons-which must be enabled by the dealer.

Your chances would be better if you already were there for something else, like oil change, differential oil change, tranny flush, etc.

it's my understanding that 2003 and 2004's have to have this manual high idle programmed into the ecm. 2004.5 and up have it programmed and only need enabling. there is a TSB on white smoke/poor cab heat on the early trucks. if u do a search and print it out, bring it to the dealer and *****, they will do it for free!!
also, all (at least common rails) have a high idle mode built into it. this has nothing to do with the manual high idle(cruise control operation) when the ambeint temps get below a certain temp (30 or so) the engine will idle at 1000 rpms automatically.
the manual high idle option that uses the cruise control buttons will idle it at 1100 rpms, and u can increase by 100 rpm increments up to 1500 using the accel and decel buttons.
hope this helps

like stated earlier-depends on the dealer. my dealer did it for free. advantages? the cool factor!! no seriously- it allows you to bump up the idle to keep engine temp up-not good to idle a long time on a cold engine.( i don't anyways) my main reason.-anything idling over 1000 rpms' does not get stored in your ecm. so the dealer can't tell you, your idle time is too excessive-denying you warranty coverage on injectors, etc!

In fact:
I took my '01 to have the cold service update. I first took it to "dealer1" who said that it would cost me $200 to have the update. I used a piece of PVC pipe that I stuck under the seat and used to wedge the peddle down for the next 40,000 miles.
Then I finally got tired of it and called in to "dealer2". I said I would be in for a trans service/band adjustment and asked if they could throw the thing on. Gave them the TSB and they said that it would be covered under warranty since I had less than 80,000 Miles... Called "dealer1" and told them to **** them selves...
Went to "dealer2" and had the service done. They charged me $45 for the PROM flash update!!! They claimed that it was only 30 minutes of labor they charged me because, on the diesel, the emissions update requirement is only to 50,000 miles. The gas/car emissions requirements are 80,000 miles.
So you can probably get away with getting the update for free if you can find a dealer to claim it as "emissions" related, and you are under 50,000 on the odo.
BTW on the 2nd gen, the idle adjusts based on outside air and engine coolant temp. The first level will kick the idle up to 1200, then second level will shut down 3 cylinders making the engine run on 3 cylinders. (sounds awesome, your neighbors will love you).
Good luck
EDIT:
Oh yea... also on the 47RE trans (maybe on the 48 too) you're going to want to idle in neutral. The valvebody in the dodge does not permit fluid circulation in "PARK". Put 'er in neutral with the parking brake on, take your extra FOB and lock the keys in the truck.

The change came in 04 and that was that the ECM that runs the engine started also controlling the automatic transmission and therefore the cruise control. The 04 ECM didn't come with the code so a reflash was needed before the option could be enabled but 4.5 had code but needed to be enabled with the DRB scanner.

Carried TSB printed from DTR, and complained of poor cab heat.
Tech smiled at me, had it done in 10 min. Build date of 10/03.
