What kind of drain plug is this???

Hi All,

I have changed a lot of oil in the past on a lot of different vehicles, but I have never seen a plug like this. I hope it is not one of those last resort stripped thread specials?

This is on the new to me 2003 2500 quad cab. This is the oil pan plug. It looks to have some type of sealant arround the edges. The edge feels like it is rubber or some type of soft plastic.

This is my first Cummins, so maybe it is normal, but just does not look right. I rather know what it is before I mess with it.

Any help is appreciated!

I don't know about the 2003 model. On my old 2000, a fast change oil shop over tightened the oil drain plug and caused it to leak. It bent the flange in on the oil pan. $400 for the pan, $600 for the labor to replace it. They denied over tightening it.
That may have happened here. I've never seen anyone put sealant on an oil drain plug before unless it was a situation like what happened to me.
I ordered and intalled an EZ drain plug from Geno's. I used sealant around the drain plug so it wouldn't leak. It never came out of the pan again as long as i owned the truck. And I never let anyone change the oil on that truck but me from then on.
If I were you, i'd get one of those EZ drain plugs from Geno's and do the same as I did on your next oil change.

Why the sealant? My 2006 didn't have it on the drain plug.

Same plug as on my 03. Is the yellow stuff the sealant you are talking about or were you marking it for the picture?

Also can replace it with a heavy duty version from Genos.

That's what I put on mine after the second oil change. That stock plug was junk as far as I was concerned.

normal drain plug for the cummins. Use a 3/8" drive to remove/install it. The rubber around it is formed onto the plug as a seal. I replaced mine with the Geno's one for the heck of it - I was ordering a few things and threw it in.

Do not overtorque it or it will crack and leak!! Genos has a couple of different replacement options. I have the Fumoto valve. Very nice.......

I can take a guess at the yellow marking.
Many shops mark the drain plugs. That why if something happens, and the paint they used has been messed with (Ie someone else did the oil change) they can prove someone else screwed with it.

We put a Fumoto on the '05 - the "pit crew" loves it!
