what causes white smoke

I always think of white/black smoke like this;
White smoke = cold unburned fuel.
Black smoke = hot unburned fuel.

Sbishop thats a great way to put it for those that don't want to get too deep into the reasoning. I do agree though that many people reporting white smoke may be seeing condensation in the exhaust system steaming off , just like gasoline cars when it's cold.
