What causes the black smoke?
I am not sure if it is good or not, but it sure looks cool when you see a Cummins romp on the throttle and a huge plum of black smoke come barreling out. Mine doesn't do it, but kinda wish it did.

Accelerating hard from an off-load condition, fuel is coming on before boost. The black smoke is partially burned diesel fuel - once the boost comes up, there's enough air (unless someone is grossly overfueled) to burn the diesel fuel more completely.
Factory ECM calibration and the small HY35W-9 turbo on the 3rd gen trucks is designed to prevent this from happening. Fueling comes on gradually to give boost a chance to follow closely in order to prevent/reduce visible smoke (particulate pollution in EPA jargon).

I've seen a few places selling adjustable presure set ups for the wastegate actuator..... would say installing this in the cab and giving the *** a twist to open the wastegate at lower than factory settings trip up the system and produce the " desired " smoke? looked like a proportioner valve / regulator not sure but could this be a quick " fix " to the lack of being able to lay down a smoke screen? Sure would be a nice way to get rid of a few thousand unwanted mosquitos or better yet the ricer at the light!

i LOVE to see smoke come out. I was pulling a 35 foot gooseneck with my step dads cummins. when i was parked i floored it just to see smoke come out. The truck didnt speed up quickly because its a 5000lbs trailer but it put a cloud of smoke so i let off at like 10mph. i was like YEAHHHHH
i hope the new truck i get will smoke. I dont like it smoking on the highway, but when at a dead stop next to some ricer, i want it to blow a LOT of smoke out
