What Causes White Smoke!?!?!

My buddy has got an 05 Cummins and when you start it up it blows white smoke for a pretty good while. It is leaking oil out the blow by and his egt's are red lining even after he took his box off?! Is this a injector prob? Head gasget? Turbo? Any suggestions?

I think head gasket. White smoke is coolant as far as I know. $$$$

Sounds like injectors. Check the oil level to see if it has risen and for the smell of diesel.

It sounds like he has a sticky injector as white smoke is usually unburnt fuel. The excess oil could be from a problem with a cylinder not having the right compression or somthing along those lines. Really he should have it checked out right away.

He'll be buying new injectors...... Bet it has a little timing rattle too. It better get fixed soon before he melts a piston. Excess oil is from the fuel washing down the cylinder and the more is "making" oil.

White smoke - What's wrong?

You can bet injectors! That's the secondary problem however,.. I'll bet he has factory filtration or close to it. Not near enough. Too much trash in the fuel these days,.. you/he needs 2micron filtration. He probably has 7 or 10 micron. 10 is factory,.. NO GOOD!!

He should probably be contacted quickly. I think I have read that if too much Diesel gets into the oil, the crank-case can get too much fluid and a kind of hydro-lock can happen that will bend rods & stuff.

Guy on another board mentioned almost an exact same senario that turned out to be inj. related and it DID hydrolock. Full Rebuild $5000 and sum to fix.

If he has a warranty left and little to mods tell him to pull the mods and drive it in the ground. If I still had my '05 and it started another injector go bad (which would have made it the 5th) I wouldn't think about stopping till they had to replace the motor. Just what I would do.
