Tranny problems ?

Truck is running up to 2500 rpms very quickly in what appears to be every gear. If I get on it heavy in any gear it runs up and then limps out. I have been running smarty on 3 and recently changed to 5 yesterday. Thats when the problem started. Previously to running on 5 I noticed a bit of tc hesitation. But now its really bad. Having a hard time just getting to freeway speeds. If I get on it heavy...instant limp. trans temp gets higher than normal quick. When it goes limp boost goes to 0.

Also...Since a couple of weeks ago I am blowing much more black smoke than normal. Even when it was on level 3.

I am in California. If I'm in the market for a new tranny now, I would go built but it might be a waste now due to upcoming regulations. Not sure if I will be able to take advantage of its ability to hold power if I have to . Sounds like I will need to be losing most of the add ons anyway when new regs go into effect.

I appreciate your thoughts and advise.

Update:
I returned smarty back to level 3. First gear seems fine but if I get on it when it shifts...goes limp boost to 0 until I let up and reapply pedal slowly.
If I get on it in higher gears it will downshift and instant limp. Once TC is locked it will hold much better, but with enough pedal...limp and 0 boost until I let up and reapply pedal slowly.

I put a call into Goerand today, but have not heard back yet.
Just trying to get an idea as to what I'm looking at as far as replace.

Anyone with knowledge on the 48re, I would like to hear from you.
Thanks.

Boost to zero might mean an intercooler leak.

Thanks for the reply.
Checked out hoses / boots. They look OK. I don't have the plastic intercooler.
Boost will build fine then just drops off with what appear to be overrev. Stops pulling at same time. Let my foot off of it and reapply throttle slowly and it will build again.

Usually with a tranny problem the engine continues to keep its rpms it just won't upshift or downshift properly, it won't go into limp mode. It sounds more like turbo issue or a boost leak. If you have a converter it could be stopped up.

Tranny is definitely getting loose. But the "going limp" or loosing all pulling power and boost was my real concern.

Checked out the turbo. spins great no wobble. checked out/ thightened all connections for intake as well as intercooler boots and hoses. inspected all wiring connections. Didn't find any problems but.....It hasn't gone limp since I did. Maybe something was loose or a wire not making good contact. I don't know. But truck is running as it did previously to the problem I was experiencing. Smoke is less too. ????

Tranny is on its last leg for sure though. Late shifts. Late into overdrive and jolting when it does hook up.

Thanks for the help and ideas.
Much appreciated.
