Which tranny does it have

Hi all. I'm sort of new to the forum. I have decided to start shoppping for my first diesel truck. I know what I am looking for thanks to all of the great posts on here and all of the knowledgeable people that reply. I am looking at an '05 2500 6spd right now. It is at a Pontiac dealership so they have no ideas about these things. Is there any way to tell if the truck has the old 6spd or the new one (ie. looking at the VIN). Thanks for any help.

The vin number should do it. Call a dealer and have them run the number.

If reverse is to the right and forward, it's an NV5600 (cast iron case). If reverse is to the left and back, it's a G56 (aluminum case).

I thought the switch from the NV5600 to the G56 took place around January of the 2005 model year.

4th - 1.38
5th - 1.00
6th - 0.79
