Towing capacity of a Dually vs SRW
Towing capacity of a Dually vs SRW
I have a 2007 Mega Cab dually 5.9 litre.
Does a SRW and a dually have the same Towing capacity?
It would seem to me that the dually could tow more but some people say the SRW will actuallty tow more because the truck weighs less.
Does anyone know the towing capacity of each?

I don't know if the capacities have changed any lately.
But the 2500, SRW 3500, and duallys were all rated to pull 21,000 GCVWR with 3.73 gears and 23,000 with 4.10 gears. We all know they will pull much much more........but that was what Chrysler rated them at. (underated them at I should say.....for their own liability reasons)
The drivetrain is the same in all 3 trucks. They will all pull the same weight. The advantage of a dually is it will provide some extra stability while pulling the weight and it does increase the cargo capacity of truck itself. The weak point on the trucks are the tires. So if you have 2 additional ones on the ground then that adds truck weight capacity. That doesn't directly effect towing weight, but a dually may have more stability while towing.
To answer your question.........Yes, in theory a dually would pull less because it weighs slightly more. But in reality, that is irrelevant, because they will all pull fine way above their "ratings".

Right out of my 2006 Dodge ram brochure:
For Ram diesel's 3500's, 4x4's
Ratings are for quad cabs;
GVWR: 9900#'s = "Payload" of 2920#'s for the srw. and 2820#'s for the long bed.
GVWR: 11,500#'s = "P/L" of 4740# (?) GVWR: 12200#'s = "P/L" of 4770#'s (?) Not sure what makes these two have a larger GVWR? I assume their long bed drw.
Max tow cap's:
No listing for 3500 with a manual tranny.
Automatic tranny:
3:73 srw = 13850#'s, long bed srw = 13750#'s, drw = 13400#'s.
GCWR: All three = 21000#'s.
4:10 srw = 15850#'s, long bed srw = 15750#'s, drw = 15400#'s
GCWR: All three = 23000#'s
I do not have time to list the 2500's right now I'll try again tomorrow.

Right on. I resisted for years, and when I finally bought the dually I couldn't believe the difference. Some of these guys can call them "training wheels" all they want, but I've driven every kind of semi imaginable and lots of different pickups, and I'm keeping my dually.

The holdup with SRW trucks is rear axle weights. It's not due to the axle ability to carry the weight. The issue is the tires. Two 17' tires can only hold so much weight. Four can carry much much more and due it more stable. Yes you can upgrade to 19.5 in rims and tires, then you may have an issue with tires shops being able to balance them. Both SRW and DRW trucks have their place.
Which can carry more weight in the back 2 tires or 4...after towing my 5th wheel on a few road trips with my 04.5 ram2500 CTD,cked my weight at truck scale.I was about 500# over on each tire in the back.Thought about how safe we will be with a dually, after a road test at the dealer,we knew a dually was needed...what a joy to drive now, one hand on the wheel and just cruise taking in the sites,my wife enjoys driving the truck when we go camping..
A 2007 Mega Dually 4WD SLT 5.9 6 Speed Manual is actually rated to tow less than a SRW, but it is only 350 pounds less. With that said the GAWR on the rear of a dually is 3,000 pound more on the dually. Payload capacity is virtually the same?
