Stumper... Gauranteed
In my life I've managed to encounter problems no one else ever does with vehicles. I've got another one. The last month or 2 I have noticed that my truck seems to have stumbled with the cruise on but it was always a quick jerk and I was never sure. The last few weeks it has started to actually die out. I'll push the clutch in as I come up to a stop sign, stop light, or turn and the engine will quit. Not every time though. Seems more often when it hasn't warmed up yet. I can feel it do it when the cruise lets off on the highway on a downhill, sometimes it makes a real hard jerk. Every time so far it has started right back up. I've replace the crank sensor and removed the edge chip. I did pull a P0620 code out of it today with the key on/off trick. Gonna clear that out with the programmer unplugged and see if it comes back when it acts up. Any ideas guys? Is there a seperate cam sensor also on an 03? It's a 2003, 6 speed, with Edge Juice w/Attitude. Thanks all,
Nick

Yes, you do have a separate cam position sensor; I think all of the 3rd gen. motors do. It's the same part number as the crank position sensor. Your symptoms seem similar to having APPS (TPS) problems, but you're apparently [U]not[U] getting the P2121 code I got when my TPS failed.

Correction: I meant a p0602 code which is "Control Module Programming Error." I don't run a downloader which seems to be linked most often to that code correct? The lift pump has been replaced with an in-tank pump by the dealer back when it was warrantied still and the pressure gauge shows it's keeping up just fine. Would a TPS make it stall but run just fine under load and acceleration? It has stumbled a couple times at cold idle too but that has been much rarer and never died yet.

FCA is another good source for these kinds of glitches, run a good dosing of ashless 2 stroke oil and Power Service to see if that changes anything.
Another really good area is the sense wire for the AC pump. It can rub on the AC lines and bare the wire throwing all kinds of oddball intermittent issues into the whole system.
Sometimes boxes that ground to the battery simply will not work correctly with the system as a whole. Ground them to chassis and problem solved.
The 03's have a problem with the ECU connectors not sealing and letting corrosion build on the pins. Another intermittent glitch that will show up as just about anything.
You have completely removed the Edge and validated the problem is still there, correct?

Yeah. I cleared the P0602 code off it with the edge removed. I started the truck and the code returned after a couple minutes idling. I'm leaning towards that P0602 code being involved. I found one repair/diagnostic bulletin from dodge on it and the procedure was to reflash the ecm, see if the code returns, and if it does replace ecm... From what I have heard that's not a cheap part. I think I'm going to try cleaning up grounds and check ecm wiring connection first before I take that plunge.

Not sure if this applies to Rams, but my Jeep PCM was bad and causing the same issues. If you can see the emissions monitors in your controller or a scanner, check them immediately after it skips. If all are incomplete, the ECM is very suspect, most likely resetting because B+ is interrupted internally.

FIXED!! I had the dealer take a look at it. The rail pressure was fluctuating more than it should. They said the spec is under 500 psi at idle/constant load and throttle. Mine was over 1500 psi fluctuation. Replaced the fuel quantity solenoid P/N 5183245aa. Diagnosis, parts and labor was under $400. I think the part itself was around $170.

Yeap, that was the FCA valve that was mentioned before.

Yep. The prices I had seen on it made it something I didn't wanna just guess at. And I'd never paid close enough attention to the rail pressure before the stalling started. I thought the price to diagnose and repair it was very fair besides.

Just my .02 worth but I always keep a spare FCA under my front seat after the first one failed. You can aquire them from a Cummins repair shop for $100.
