Stick vs. Auto

I'm about to purchase an '04 3500 (single axle) SLT. I was looking for a 6 spd., but this one is super nice and an auto. Besides the obvious, are there any other differences between a stick truck and and auto?

Auto is rated to tow more because of the softer drive train.

Stick has stronger U-joints in my 06, not sure about 04.

Clutches are cheaper than transmissions.

The 2nd gens had a bigger ring gear with the manual. I think it might be the same with the 3rd gens - at least the first ones. Craig

If you ever plan to get an exhaust brake, it will be more effective and cheaper with a manual.

Other than the trans itself, there are basically the same, the auto has different electronics but that is about it. I would not be afraid of the auto, but if you are going to run more than stock power you are going to have to spend $2k/5k depending on upgrades. A heavy duty clutch $12/1500.00.

I love my auto, but if I towed more than I do now, I would pick the manual.

Thanks for the info, guys! Well, the auto truck is mine, I brought it home last night. It was just too nice to pass up, especially for the $. What mods need to be done to the auto for longevity with moderate power upgrades? Does the auto have a good track record? What are it's weaknesses?
