shifting from 4 low to 2H

I have an 2004.5 automatic with a manual lever for the 4 transfer case selections; 4L, N, 2H, 4H.

Issue I have is that I had thought the way to move from 2H to 4L is to put the trans selector in nuetral then change the transfer case from 2H to 4L but this works like crap, gears are moving and grinding occurs. I even tried simply Park but that doesn't work either.

So I read the book and the book says to shift between 3 and 5 mph when going from 4L to 2H or vice versus. Tried this and it did not work, transfer case ended in nuetral and that was it.

Any suggestions? I feel like a more-on that i can not shift the truck from 2 wheel to 4 wheel. I like the 4L for back up heavy loads. Only thing I don't like is that the front end is locked and man, that truck loves to duck walk in 4wd.

THanks
SAS

That's the nature of these x-fer cases. You have to make the shift from 2h to 4L quick and hard. Occasionally I have had to shut the motor down shift it then restart. But as I have done it more and more I have gotten better at making the shift without it grinding.

I always shift from 4lo to 2hi while moving. I usually go in low 2nd push in the clutch shift the tansmission to neutral then I move the the transfer case to neutral give it half a second then to high range then I shift into 1st gear and let out the clutch at a idel. Never do stop and it works perfect.
When going from low range to Hi I think you might be rushing it make it a 2 step shift and see if it helps.
