'96 Problem shifting to 4 LOW
I've never asked a ******* or anybody else about this, but ever since my truck was new, I had "problems" shifting into 4 low. 4 HI is always easy, but if I shift into 4 low regardless of the tran selector being in gear, in neutral or park, the gears grind so bad it sounds horrible. I've learned the best thing for me to do going in & out of 4 lo is to shift tranny to neutral and shut off the engine. Is this "normal" ? what is going on ? A bad synchronizer ?
mine had the same problem, i changed out the fluid in the transfer case. the fluid came out almost like mud, cleaned the thing inside and out, and spent the extra dollar on royal purple fluid, and 30,000 miles later, i just changed the fluid, and it still looked like new. i shifts perfectly. i don't like synthetic in my engine, but damnitt, it has found a permanent home now in the rest of the drivetrain. it even made my transmission shift smooth as a babies bottom.

Yeah, thats on my list of things to do, put Royal Purple in my pumpkins and my transfer case, and in my tranny when I beef it up. I am just curious why don't you like the synthetics in your motor?
I do what both of the above gentlemen said..
I though have a posilock so my 4wd shifting is the same, except i connect and disconnect the front axle.... In 4HI (most of my 4wd usage is done in sand mind you) i just pull the shifter back and it goes in easy. ive only used 4 low a few times, and I stop the truck, put it in neutral shift into 4lo, put the trans in gear and go...
The T case fluid tho i change every third oil change, and just before and after deer season. I work cattle alot in areas that can get muddy fast, and or are usually sandy.
Try changing it out, and if that dont work, then your synchos have gone bad.... That worked for me tho, i hope it does for u as well...

with my truck having so many miles and never been run on sythetic, if i switch i will probably find some new oil leaks i didn't before, and it just make me feel wierd putting synthetic in my engine, just doesn't feel right.
