Smile Shifting Problems 4wd Low

Hey Guys
I am so pumped up about DTR web site! I just bought my very 1st Dodge Truck and most importantley my 1st Deisel Truck... I Love It! Never go back to spark plugs!
However I am having a tough time shifting into 4wd low. I have read the owners manuel and have done exactley what it says PLUS I have owned 4wd Jeeps , Broncos, etc. my whole life with manuel transfer cases and have never had this much problem. The truck is brand new with 488 miles on it. When I go from 2wd to neutral to 4wd low the gears grind BAD. So bad I immediately stop trying. I attempted to go back into 2wd. By then my 3-4 mph coast with the transmission in neautral had come to a stop. I tryed to shift into 2wd and it was just as bad. So bad the truck was stuck in neutral and I thought I was going to have to call a tow truck. Finally, I got it into 2wd with a little bit of grinding as it finially shifted into 2wd. I am really gun shy about trying to shift into 4 wd low again, but I will be needing to for towing purposes. I pray no damage was done, but guys Please Help!

If you get stuck in neutral on the transfer case, shut your engine off, trans in neutral, and shift the transfer case, re-start engine. To get it to shift, you must push the shifter "firmly" while stopped or slightly rolling, in neutral gear. Mine shifts into 4 low even if I am stopped. The main thing is be "firm".

It is a black 2006 2500 quad cab CTD Big Horn with the automatic. I bought it new with 44 miles on it.
I love the truck.
It is looking to be pretty darn good on fuel too. So far from what the computer beside the windshield visors has me averaging 19-20 mpg which is better than my last truck 2000 1/2 ton Z-71! Yea!
But any advise on the 4wd low is greatful. Like I said I am terrified not to do any damage to it. New trucks like this don't come into my life too often. The trouble I ran into, do you think that is anything to worry about.
Thanks Guys!
Ed

I don't think there anything to worry about. I've had 4x4's for umteen years and I had a little trouble getting used to mine also. Much stiffer than what I was used to. This also my first Dodge.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm going to play with it a little more and try to get used to it.

Like cdru said above. I stop and put tranny in neutral. DON'T stop at neutral on the T case, just 1 swift move straight to 4 low. Never had any problems.

Mine does the same thing. I ended up shutting the truck off shifting into 2wd then restarting. Never had to do this with any of my other 4wd's. Next time I go out I will try the rolling 3-4mph thing that the manual say's to do. I hope I dont have to do the engine shut down thing every time, that would get kinda annoying.

YEA, I'm right there with you. I bet it is just a trick I need to learn from just getting used to the truck. ........
I hope. Just not comfortable with the way it is meshing of the gears into 4wd low
