I should mention that I have not seen the oil pan. The weather was wet and snowy on that morning and the motor oil had mixed in with the snow so i wasn't anxious to climb under and take a look. I called the 800 number and Dodge arranged towing to the dealer. I called the dealer the next day and was informed of their diagnosis and that they had ordered a new engine. Since it wasn't going to be my checkbook involved I wasn't about to quible about the cause.

Started my '03 so it could warm up a bit this past Monday. I went back into the house for a cup of coffee and to gather my things. I heard it stall so I went out to restart it. Turned the key and nothing but clicks.....thinking the batteries were down for some reason I checked the voltage and it was fine. Pulled the dipstick to find it completely dry. I looked under the truck and found a river of motor oil running down my driveway. Dealer say's the oil pan rotted out causing a complete loss of oil and the engine to seize. Luckily it has 64K on it and still has a warrantee. The dealer has ordered a new engine.
Anyone else have this experience? Perhaps we should all be taking a careful look at our oil pans. I would note there was no sign of a leak prior to this.

It probably went into the High Idle Mode and just ran her dry! I wouldnt think that it should take long for one of these engines to go south with no oil pressure. Low Oil shutoff switch???????????????? I never knew that the Cummins had these! JB

Hmmm, son hauls all over and in a lot in Northern states. I wonder then if the mgnesium chloride is responsible for his differential cover rusting badly.
I guess you should wash these trucks like you vote, early and often.

you can install a low oil level switch in nearly anything... Just takes a little wiring. Some oil pans have provisions in them for one, others would have to have bungs welded in. It can be set up to just turn on a warning light in the cab, the Cummins ECM may even have an unused output than can be sent thru it. Could even send keyswitch power thru it before the ecm, so that if the switch doesn't satisfy, the engine won't start.
I put a low oil pressure shutdown(murphy) on my bro-n-laws 1-ton crew truck. Stupid hands kept running it out of oil. After one engine, then a set of heads and a camshaft, I wired it in to the power for the distributor, no oil, no go.
