Rust on FF5320 Upper lip

I have had the Glacier diesel Filtration kit for a few years now. After every fuel filter change I always simple green the area and rinse. I go for a quick drive to dry it all up and ck for leaks. I notice I sometimes get rust on the upper crevice of the filter. It's always clean on the mating surface of the filter so I am not real worried the rust is going to get into the fuel system. ANyone else experience this? Do I need to be concerned about it?

I just pulled my Cat 1R-0750 off after 30K miles and had zero rust.. But I think the cat uses an alum mounting surface and the Fleetguard is alum.

If its not inside the gasket I wouldn't worry.

Speaking of a gasket, are either of you running the small gasket around the 1-14 thread. Why or why not?

The Filter comes with a rubber gasket already attached to it. If your talking about that rubber ring that goes over the Post then YES you have to run it. THats what makes the fuel get filtered. It comes in one side of the filter, passes through the media, then out the other side. If you didn't have that rubber piece then fuel would just go streight through.

That is exactly what I was talking about. Thanks. I had seen where some guys were not using it though and was curious. My thought was the same as yours on the reason to use it.

The only filter I run that has one is the BF1212. The cat's don't come with one, and neither did the Baldwin BF7633 (Cross to FF5320 and Cat 1R-0750).

Does the FF5320 have one?

Yes the ff5320 comes with the o-ring stem seal. I run the Hastings high efficiency Cat cross over. The number eludes me right now. It is made by Baldwin and does come with a o-ring stem seal. I believe the Cat filter has an o-ring stem seal recessed into the top of the mounting plate.

The Hastings should be a Baldwin, and thats a lousy filter. Using the same specs the Cat uses the Baldwin is a 7um filter.

I will have to look at my next cat. But I know for sure the Baldwin BF7633 doesn't have an o-ring, but due to the specs I just listed I returned all of them.

I had it happen on mine, it wasn't on the inside though. It still bothered me and I changed over to the CAT filter.

Here is a thread with a guy who had very bad water problems and the guts of the filter were rusted.
