Removing Stock Muffler w/o Cutting???
Removing Stock Muffler w/o Cutting???
With the crimps in the stock pipes where the U-Bolts clamp the pipes together, can you get them undone without cutting? What is the easiest way to do this?? Thanks, Jason
Good luck, I beat on mine and heated it with a torch and it still took hours. Finaly got a ziz wheel and cut little noches in the pipe to get if off. Next time Ill cut it all up or take it off at the turbo and just order a new system. Who knows though yours might just fall right off.
i tried to seperate the pipes on my exhaust system to remover the cat and muffler, but to no avail, out came the 18v dewalt sawzall and went to town but that was my experience im sure some folks have had success w/ out having to cut it, i thought it was gonna be a snap to just slip it all apart.....WRONG. Hope yers comes apart easier then mine...
You might be able to save the old stuff by heating and beating it off, but why??? You usually distort it and then when you put it back together it leaks. I don't want the exhaust seeping into my cab. If it doesn't come apart easily I just cut it with the torch and replace it. Much faster, cleaner and less stressfull.

same thaught here. I would recommend a sawzall. cut on as straight of a piece as possible so if you ever want to replace it you can just put the muffler back and use band clamps. You would never know the difference.
I just finished my exhaust tonight and had no real problems. I ordered the replacement muffler and cat delete from dppi(I think thats it, Mark Craig is his name from Nashville, Tn.) Much easier than on my 04 ford F-350. I cut a couple of notch's on my cat and muffler with a grinder and cutting wheel and it came off pretty easy. The cat can now be replaced without any noticable damage for warrenty work. The sound is loud and proud. About 3 hours and a few tools. It is worth the money as well as the effort.
thats what i was thinking of doing...Mark from DPPI said that they dont have any muffler deletes for the 06s cause there is a resonator right behind the muffler...trying to find out more info on it, but that stinks...i wish i could hear the diff between the trucks straight piped and the ones that have cat delete and straight piped...i like em loud, but i want it to sound good too...
I have a truck on order. One of the reasons that I liked the 06s was that the exhaust is already 4" all the way back. A diesel does need a small amount of back pressure, I has wondered about gutting the cat, but are there enough gains to be worth it? I had a 99PSD that I just cut the muffler off and replaced it with a piece of flex pipe and two band clamps. I had guys pull up beside me and ask if the truck had an exhaust brake, it sounded great. I think the new truck will have plenty of power for what I tow, a max of 9000, but usually only about 6,000. Would be interrested in anything to help MPG, don't want to get into the power upgrades that hurt fuel mileage. I would like to hear from anyone who has tinkered with the exhaust on the 06s.
I don't think there is much if any gain in removing the cat. They are pretty free flow already. Now the muff I would think about doing something to... Also you are not going to get the same sound you got from your psd since you are dealing with an I6 now instead of the V8. I do have to agree the V8's both ford and chev sound pretty nice with exhaust on them but the cummins never seem to get that nice rap like the v8's do. We all are just missing the extra couple cans in ours. Which in my mind isn't a bad thing.
