can the factory muffler be removed by simply removing the clamps and forceing the pipes out? im tryin to figure out how loud i want my truck to be and i dont want to tear up the pipes in case its too loud.

Depending how rusty it is, it can be. An angle grinder and sawzall were required for mine, however.

when the factory installs the muffler clamps, the clamps crimp the muffler and the pipe together so you cannot just pull them apart.... so enter the sawzall

I removed the clamps but they were put on so tight at the factory as to crush the pipes. I used my flaming hacksaw to cut the slits a little longer and then heated the pipe untill the split could be spred open. Use the cutting head, it burns a lot hotter.

Muffler

If your doing this on your 01 it wont be loud at all unless you remove the resonator. I put a straitthrough muffler and its not loud at all. It came apart farly easy i just had to make 2 little slits in each end of the muffler and it came right apart with a little hammering. It wont be loud enough where you want to put it back on.

Talking muffler removall

Here's a tip from an old Welder,Fabricator if You call 52 old.I took the muffler off My 2004.5 truck was'nt that loud.I used the ol hot wrench.Heat the connextion to a bright red color and then move tail pipe back and forth, up and down, pulling at the same time very quickly.Twisting helps also.I know this sounds like a lot exercising but it comes off every time.Fire is a wounderfull tool. Muffler stays unmolested to be reinstalled if nessasary, but why?I recycled Mine,China needs the steel.Mannwelder

upon further inspection today i realized that its not a factory muffler and the reasonator that u guys speak of is not there. the only thing from the turbo to the tailpipe is the muff. where would the reasonator be located?

Resonator

I took my resinator off tonight. The resinator is located between the down pipe and the muff, it looks like a huge can 3inch- 4 inch out. If your not looking to be real loud I dont suggest you take off the muffler. I couldnt believe the difference in noise.

after viewing pics of another exhaust i have found out that my muffler has been removed and its actually the resonator that is still in place. it is 3" inlet and 4" outlet but then reduces down to 3" again. it seems kinda sloppily done but no leaks. it may have been done in a pinch by the PO. if this is removed and a pipe put in its place with the tailpipe in the stock location will the sound be too much with the windows up. i love the sound of strong cummins so the sound isnt a problem but i also like to listen to my sirius radio.

resinator

The noise with the windows up isnt bad, when you punch it gets a little dronny , but overall it its not bad.

if you keep the factory size pipe and get rid of resonator and the muffler you'll love the sound. i say go for it and let us know what you think, read my previous post and you'll see that i love the sound, i myself could actually go louder, but oh well. i don't have a money tree!
