Power steering gear box

My 03 CTD, Power steering gear box is leaking fluid. Has anyone else had this problem and what is usually the remedy? I also had the 11.5 rear axle replaced several months ago and got into some slick mud the other night and couldn't get both wheels to spin, even with slight pressure on the parking brake, I sure hope my LS wasn't replaced with a single traction rearend. How can I check for this without pulling the cover?

On my 01 had a steering gear box leak and it turned out to be the bolts on the top cap were loose in fact only finger tight. I do not know if the 3rd gens have the same box or not but worth a check. Cant answer the second part.

Tim Holt reported that same problem and fix on his 03. The locking nut for the steering box adjustment was loose. Tightening fixed it. Tim also said to be sure to hold the adjusting screw in position while tightening the lock nut.

I just noticed mine leaking a week ago. I cleaned it off and after a week it has only just began to leak oil down the side about an inch or so. I will try tightening the bolts tomorrow and see if that fixes it, if not its a trip to the dealer for a new one. My warranty expires in 6,000 miles (3/36,000 portion) so I'm going to have them look at the whole truck for any other problems.

Jack up the rear of the truck, both sides. Put it in neutral, no brakes or park. Turn one wheel by hand, if the other wheel turns the same direction you have posi, if it turn backwards, it is an open rear.

Had the same problem with the leaking box. When I made the appointment to bring it in for that and a few other things, I asked them to order the parts beforehand so I would not be without my truck for a few days. Assured me everything was in stock. Ended up nothing was. Took 3 days to install new box. Going back next week to replace seat back for broken lumbar.
