pop noise

I have a question regarding a noise i had on friday. While pulling my boat i went to pass some one and when i pressed the fun pedal to the floor truck starts passing car and building boost then i heard a loud pop like an air release. truck continued to run fine. any ideas? tried to get it it to dupicate but it wouldn't then i heard a slight tick or a tap like a gasser with bad gas. any ideas

Are you experiencing any clouds of black smoke under load? If so, it sounds like a boost line or intercooler-endcap popped loose. IIRC, some of the early 2005's came with an intercooler that had smooth plastic endcaps, which could crack or pop loose under full load (high boost); most of those intercoolers have already failed and been replaced with the current intercoolers that have cast aluminum end caps that don't pop loose. If you have had that happen, you may get boost but not enough volume of air to properly combust the fuel, hence a cloud of black smoke (unburnt fuel) under load.

No clouds of black smoke. It sounded kind of like a pressure relief of some sort. Truck continues to build boost as normal.

Forgot to ask, How about the tapping sound, any thoughts. To me it sounded like valve clatter in a gasser. It wasn't a steady clatter, kind of a hit and miss clatter.

Check the boots on the turbo air tubes, from the turbo to intake manifold. sometimes the boots pop out from under the clamps. Check all around the clamps . tops can look good and underneath where hard to see can be poped out.
Motor will continue to run good. On stock motor computer will defuel if boost is lacking to burn fuel good. Will be short on top power.

bluepp I noticed that i can't get over 26lbs of boost under wot. it will spike to about 32lbs and then immediatley drop to about 26lbs. what could be causing this. and this is with the box off. could this be those boots are popped off. i looked but still can't see it.

I don't know what happens when an injector fails but I have been seeing alot of threads about cracked injectors lately.

Keep an eye on your oil dipstick, too much oil means fuel is leaking in.

Also one more thing, could be that you "barked the turbo". I mean when you get on it then let off quickly sometimes it will pop.

Good luck............Jim

checked the clamps they are all fine. called the local diesel perf shop he said my boost pressures are completly normal. checked the oil and it might be a hair higher i don't know it could be my imagination. i smelled the oil i don't smell diesel it smells like used oil. i really hope there is not an injector issue. i don't have that many miles on the truck. i don't dog it and the box that WAS on there was turned off most of the time and has been removed. if anyone else might have some ideas for the leaking injector please let me know. thanks for the help.

I had the exact same thing happen the first time I towed my boat at about 1k. In my case I had forgotten to put the truck in tow/haul after a day of fishing. There is a steady grade onto the freeway right away on my way home. I got on it pretty hard and heard and felt a pop and loss of power for just a second. I don't remember any other noise at all and it ran fine after that. A few days later I got a check engine light just after leaving the house for work so ran straight to the dealer which is directly behind my house. At least that's convenient. They didn't find any problems but did do the so called mileage reflash. I ran a search and found the boot clamp issue so tightened everything up a bit when I got home. I really don't think the boots leaked in my case but it could be I suppose. My truck has 4k now without any problems or pops but I make double sure and hit the tow/haul button now when towing the boat.

It idles for about 5 seconds then I hear what seems to be pressure relief valve going off. i Can turn my truck off start it again to try to duplicate this problem but it only does it the first time i start my truck for the day... i haven't been able to get mine to do it again. i think i must have just built too much boost while under load. as far as other noises go i've come to terms that these things just make sounds. i have one that when idleing in p or n you really can't hear it but put it in drive with your foot on the break and it makes a clattering sound. i have yet to figure this one out.
