Unless you are looking at a real gauge, you only have computer guesses that try to make you happy. Real gauge cold as much as 80. dlying down highway at 50 - 60 or so. Idle at 25-30 is my norm.

Raspy, you are right, Lame, Lame, Lame. I remember reading that a long time ago, and they may as well have put an idiot light in. Wish they had put a real gauge in. Imagine if they put a fuel gauge with this design. I wonder if Ford and Chevy are as deceitful with their O.P. gauge?
I've read this before, but obviously this is true in some trucks and not in others. Dslpwr81 mentioned that his stays just over 40 no matter what. That sounds like a computer readout and that is not what my truck does. Mine fluctuates according to engine RPM, throttle, temp, etc. The automakers do some stoopid stuff but I can't believe that they would include a completely fabricated gauge show that sophisticated in the trucks computer. I do believe that they "condition" or regulate the gauges output to a degree to filter out the weird readings that would confuse the general population, but as long as it's not staying in the exact same spot that the reading should be somewhat representative of the actual pressure.
My pump pressurizes to 80 lbs cold idle in winter, 20-25 lbs hot idle in winter, and anywhere between 40-65 lbs running.
In the summer, it pressurizes to 70 lbs cold idle, 17-22 lbs hot idle, and anywhere between 40-65 lbs running.
I use Mobil 1, so oil pressure is a bit lower when compared to dino 15-40 because it's on the lower side of the viscosity index for a 40W when hot. Plus, synthetic oil just flows a lot smoother than dino, so oil pressure will fall 2-4 lbs when compared to dino.
The most important thing about oil pressure is whether or not you have a healthy rise in pressure with a rise in RPM. If your cruising oil pressure (at, say 1800 rpm) is 45-65 lbs, your bearing clearances SHOULD be OK. It's when oil pressure doesn't move much above 20 or 30 lbs when you raise the engine RPM that should make you concerned-not idle hot oil pressure in and of itself.
Hope this helps-
