Read several posts on this issue before. Believe it was stated draining the oil in the pan can cause a syphon action and pull some oil out of the filter. Since I'm not a great mechanic, and have done several oil changes without making a mess taking the filter off, it makes sense to me. You didn't state if you drained the pan first.

Thats typical. One piece of advice.......run the truck and get it up to temp before draining the oil. Some contaminates will not be drained and be left clinging to the pan if you drain it cold. May just be an old wives tail, but it is what I was taught, and what I do.

Helps with faster oil draining to. Seems it's better to drain the pan first. This way the filter is down enough and it's not spilling all over underneath and on your hands. Works slicker than dog pooh on ice.

What i usually do is when I come home from work Friday, I throw a pan under the truck and let it drain. Then Saturday I pull the filter, etc.

What kind of filter? I usually find that the Mopar or Fleetguard filters are near full when changing the oil. Proven this theory by the oil running down my arm when taking the dang things off. I also find that the orange, yellow, and "other" filters will often be a couple inches + down from the top which makes my job easier.

You might wanna try slipping a plastic bag up on the filter. It saves the oil down the arm thing....unless you like that warm wet feeling. I loosen the filter first then slip one of those bags that the wife thinks they're going to stop makin....( we have 2 million under the sink) and finish takin it off. No mess at all. Hope this helps.

Your wife and my Mom must be sisters! She even washes them out and re-uses them.
