Oil Filter Half Full

I changed my oil and filter the other day and when I spun off the old oil filter I was happy I did not spill a drop. Then I noticed it was only half full. I have never seen that before. Any ideas why?

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
cooling and syphon will pull oil out of some filters.

Mine will do that on occasion if I let it sit too long after I shut it down. I usually try to change when hot.

Both my 2000 5.9 and now the 6.7 does it every time I change oil.. Mind you my oil change ritual take 24 hours. I let it drain for a day and right before I put in the oil I spin in off and every time its only half full.

Same here, I always pull the drain plug when hot and let it drain. Then I wait till the engine is cooled off, and the oil level is far enough down the filter so that I can remove it without any drips.

Thanks for all the replies. I was a bit concerned when I noticed it. I'll just keep an eye on things for now. Thanks again fellas.
