Oil Filter
The tighter the filter the more soot you catch, but most soot is also sub-micron. And with modern emissions the modern oil is designed to thin soot and keep it from agglomerating, this process makes it VERY hard to filter out. Soot particles by themselves are sub-micron. It takes the agglomeration to catch the soot. Even with my 2um bypass filter I am at 3.9% soot at 22K miles on my oil... The motor makes the soot, and the oil keeps it from doing damage, but beware that it also helps the soot loading increase.
So I need some help guys. I am the proud new owner of a new to me 06 Mega Cab 3500. I had this site refered to me by a coworker and said you guys know it all, so here I am. I have been reading this forum and trying to research on all the info you guys have posted but frankly I am lost. My truck has had the oil changed everytime at the dealership, every 5,000 miles, according to the carfax. As to what was run in it I have no idea. I recently changed it for a quick trip because it was due and used a fram filter(which now I know was the wrong thing to do) and standard 15-40 rotella(not so sure, right thing to do). I have been thinking of making the switch on all fluids to the amsoil, however the truck has about 67,000 miles on it now and I was told that I am borderline to many miles to use amsoil. Don't understand that but maybe one of you guys do. Anyhow, I am only going to put about 7500 to 10000 miles a year on the truck, with mostly highway driving and towing my fathers 24' fishing boat so what do you guys think I should do? I am really not to interested in trying different brands and using test kits and all that stuff.
Thanks,
TUG
P.S. I currently have 265/70r17 on the truck, am going to put 285/75 on it, on the stock wheels. Leveling kit or no leveling kit?
Thanks,

Welcome!
No issues at all switching at that many miles. Personally I run amsoil in everything I own, I have switched to it at 120K miles before.
As for the leveling kit, pure aesthetics.. So whatever you want.

You should have no problem going to synthetics at that many miles. I go back and forth all the time at three times as many miles. Rotella is a fine oil too, IIRC it is the best selling diesel oil. Don't get too catch up with all the keyboard chemists and oil myths. The only thing I will say is don't use fram, it is the only oil filter cummins has gone out and said not to use.
I understand your concern going to Amsoil at 67,000 miles....
I mean, is the engine even broken in yet?
It probably is broken in, but barely. Go ahead and use the Amsoil and run another 90,000 miles until you have to adjust the valves, then you can go another 300,000 miles or so before you should think about doing a top-end rebuild.

what an appropriate term
I use the Fleetguard Stratapore and haven't found a favorite oil yet. I just had synthetic 5W-40 in for winter and changed that out 10 days ago with DelVac 15-40. I bought the DelVac for $6 a gallon. I've put 3000 miles on since the change, so I'll be due again in a couple weeks. I'd like to try the Valvoline Premium Blue and see what kind of UOA reports I get.
