Oil color after change

I have read on here that some have concerns about their engine oil becoming very black almost immediately after an oil change.

Just did mine for the third time since owning this truck and on all three services, at 3k miles on old Delo400 oil, the oil is still golden color and clean looking.

Why is mine this way and other turn black so quickly?

Rick

It appears to be an issue more so with 2004½ and on models, speculations of a result of emmission controls and changes in injection timing are the cause.

Yes, as you can see in my sig, mine is an 04.5. I've changed the oil once so far and checked it as soon as I got home. Used Delo400 also and after 7 miles it was black. Talked to a Powerstroke owner while I was changing it and he said his does the same thing.

After breaking in good they do better. Mine stays clear until about 6000 then turns black. When the engine was new it turned black right away. Fords used to be real bad about black oil.

Haulin - this is a '600' issue. They all turn it black almost immediately.

Nothing to worry about though Rico, black doesn't mean it's in bad shape.

Do any of you think a 600 will ever produce oil that's not as black? Maybe after it's broken in more? I thought I read a story on the TDR about a higher mileage 600 that stopped making the oil black quickly and also had a gain in fuel economy at the same time. Any thoughts?

I changed my Delvac 1 at 7500 mi. this weekend and refilled with Delo since it will be warmer soon. The oil was black as tar coming out and I let it drain for an hour while I changed the oil, fuel, and air filters then closed it up, threw a qt of new Supertech 15w-40 in it for fun, then drained that out black as tar.

I refilled with the 3 gals of Delo and checked dipstick 20 mins after running it for 2 minutes, and the new oil on the stick looked every it as black as the stuff I had drained out of it previously. I know it has nothing to do with the efficacy of the oil itself but it does kind of bug me how much soot must be grinding around in that motor, with potentially could have something to do with the poor UOA I had on 7500 mi of D1?
