My '06 is dead.

Well, this morning I went to start my truck (almost 41K on the odo.), and it fired once, then died. I tried again, and it just cranked, but wouldn't fire at all. tried a couple more times; nothing. I bought it used back in September, and it has never done this before. However, every 1 in 5 times, it would take 2 cranks to start it, ever since I bought it. Sounds like progressive failure to me. The truck was built Dec. 7th of 2005. Any ideas? Injection pump? Lift Pump? Seriously clogged fuel filter? ( yeah right). What were some of the common ailments of the '06 fuel system? I already miss driving my truck!

Do you know if it was ever modified. The cp3 could be the culprit. I would start with the basics. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? I would start there.

I had the truck scanned by a master Cummins mechanic at a Dodge dealer, whom I'm friends with. truck shows no evidence of modification whatsoever. I changed the fuel filter (Napa Gold) back in early December. It probably has less than 4K miles on it.

Have you tried to undo one of the fuel lines to a injector to see if its getting fuel? Had a similiar problem, killed the truck then tried to crank and would not fire just would keep cranking over, turned out to be the ac compressor was locked up, when I removed the belt fired right up.

Before you take anything apart, did you throw any codes?

Flip the key 3 times like described in the sticky thread up top and see if it shows codes.... That should work on your 05.

Check the ground connections at battery. I don't know why but Chrysler grounds the ECM at that location. If loose will play havoc with the ecm circuit.

sounds like a bad injector that will not allow the system to build rail presure or a bad relief valve. try to unplug the fca and crank it over to see if it starts. Or you can unplug the grid heaters and give a small shot of ether into the intake.

Redneck,
Where exactly are you seeing the 3 time key flip instructions? My truck is an '06, so will this work to display codes? For some reason I cannot find the sticky!

Flipped the key 3 times and the code P 1740 displayed on the dash, but nothing else. Anybody know what this code is?

That's a transmission code. It doesn't mean much really if it hasn't lit up recently... Like maybe someone over worked the converter back before you bought it.

I'd try cranking it a few more times and maybe connect a jumper box to the battery if it doesn't crank and see if it throws another code.

I know on my 07 it would do weird start up stuff like crank over fire for a sec and then continue to crank to only throw a check engine light and I'd have to try to start it twice.
It was a bad battery or possibly a bad connection on the battery (I bought new batteries anyway). After the new batteries I deleted the code and everything is back to normal. The code was P2509 though.

Anyway, I'd check connections, cables and batteries first before diving into the fuel system. The fuel system is covered under warranty but it would suck paying for a tow and diagnostics if it's just something simple you can spend an hour figuring out.

Bad idea to loosen a fuel line to see if there is fuel there.

Yeah no kidding. Plus the truck is under warranty.... Check the simple stuff then call a tow truck!

I cleared the P 1740 code on the cluster by turning the key a few more times, but all of a sudden the truck started right up. Any ideas? Still sounds like a lift pump to me.
