motor loosing power

Hello all,

Friend has a 2000 or 2001, can't remember which. Claims his truck is loosing power of time. Air filter clean, motor oil changed regularly, tranny and diffs have also been serviced recently, checked the fuel filter and was black but not bad, looked in fuel canister and OMG 1/4" of what looked and felt like silted mud on the bottom, spent the next 20 min cleaning it out. Didn't have a new filter so put the old one back in. Couldn't get the darn thing to start. Didn't hear a pump priming the canister either!!

Question, is the fuel pump or lift pump or both, before the fuel filter if so is there anyway to clean out the gunk or does it need to be cleaned out by a mechanic.

need help

Thanks

Jamie, for a friend

I am by no means an expert. But i think the no start issue is a failed lift pump. I hope you didnt disturb that gunk in the bottom of the fuel canister too much as it may find its way to the injection pump. Of course i believe a failed lift pump may have allready toasted the injection pump anyways. I would advise him to check for codes. Po216 is the code that will show if the injection pump is damaged. If there are no codes. clean that fuel canister out completely and install a new filter and say a few prayers.

sounds like he needs a new lift pump before he kills the injector pump. He might be able to pull the codes using the key method but the pump code may only show on a reader.

Lots of those the lift pump fails and eaither then or in a short while the injection pump goes. Its been getting starved for fuel and damage is done.Common failure on the VP44.Replaced many lift pumps on them and within hours to a few days/weeks they get towed in again with dead injection pump.Time after time.

I think this is your problem, where is that stuff comming from? i have changed lots of filters on my trucks and never see anything in the bottom of the canister. Might get more info on this if you ask over in the 2nd gen forum.
There is only one pump, ( lift pump) and it is right below the filter canister.
