engine loosing power

I'm a mom who just received a call from my son who is on the road in a friends diesel dodge ram and have lost the ability to excellerate. Top speed is now 15mph. They are in the U.P. of michigan and are isolated and stranded calling me for advice. I have no clue what to tell them. They think they got some bad fuel. What can I tell them. Thank you from a worried Mom.

I have a couple of questions before I can help.
1: What year is the truck.
2: How soon after fueling up did he start having problems.
3: Is the engine RPM's running normal range (800 rpm @ idle - 2500rpm high idle) ?
4: Stick or automatic?

I agreee that more info is needed. I also think that the problem sounds like bad or more likely gelled fuel in the UP of Michigan.

I live in Florida, and have not had the 'enjoyment' of gelling. I was thinking along the lines of maybe gas, if it is indeed the engine that is acting up. I have seen diesels run like pure ---- because of gas in the fuel, without destroying it ( yet).

From the one symtom that is given, I would guess that the fuel filter is clogged.
