Lowering the rear of 2WD '03

I hope this is the right forum....It's drivetrain related, I think

I just got done removing the two blocks that were between the axle and the leaf spring pack. Lowered the truck about 1 1/8" or so. A step in the right direction. It's starting to look 2WD now....

The question. Could I remove the overload spring without doing damage to the rest of the springs? Would there be any other detrimental effects? Removing that spring would lower the back of the truck another 3/4" to 7/8".

I won't ever come close to taxing the payload capacity (2500 lb) of this truck. Definitely won't be hauling lead bricks or anything heavy. The absolute most I can figure will be 1500 lbs which includes the tounge weight of my racecar trailer.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for any info,
Mike in Arkansas (up to 250 miles now!!)

;D Well, I'm a big fan of going bigger (maybe it's an ego deficiency) but I'll chip in my .02 anyway. ;D

The overload springs are not necessary and can be removed. What will limit your upward suspension travel will be the bump stops. If you can live with the limited travel you'll have after the lowering, go for it. If you find yourself hitting the bump stops on a regular basis - you've gone too far.

Avoid the temptation to mess with the bumpstops. They're specifically engineered to give you enough operating clearance for your suspension/tires/axle components when the whole show is fully compressed. And, avoid going to a bigger tire/wheel package too.

Best to y'all

Yep, I noticed the axle getting closer to the bumpstop. It has plently of travel left with the factory blocks removed. But I am concerned about removing the overload spring and getting another 3/4" closer, and having a lowered spring rate at 'full bump' as well.

I just measured my trailer ball height, and lowered all the way down on the mount, it will just make it. The mount would have been much too high without removing the factory blocks.

I'll just leave it where it is for the time being. Maybe later I'll get rid of the overload and add airbags just for insurance.

Thanks for the reply and letting me "think out loud".

Mike in Arkansas
