K&N or S&B air filter
K&N or S&B air filter
I have a 2006 Cummins. I installed a K&N cone air filter kit 10,000 miles ago. I have read several post of these filters not properly filtering out particles going through the filter to the turbo. Does anyone recommend a replacement cone filter that will attach to the K&N tube? Or should I just leave the K&N filter on there? I read that some are using the S&B filter that would attach to the K&N tube. They look just like a K&N filter with the same oiling concept.
I've had my K&N for over 30k... It works pretty good, but I would much rather have the S&B... But when I got my K&N, S&B really wasn't around to much... But I have installed many of the new style S&B's and they are much better... Just my input
My K&N was the very first thing I put on and I have no problems what so ever and I'm coming up on 80K. I have two of them so when I replace one I can clean the old one really well and let it dry for a couple of days then put it in a plastic bag until I need it and it has worked great. I know I'm probably in the minority but it's worked great.
Both k&n nor s&b will filter better by proven oil analysis for silicone than the afe pg7 filter. Proven fact backed up by my oil tests (2 ppm silicone on 11,000 mile sample) and most of the highest hp twin turbo trucks on the road and track. You can believe the marketing hype or go with the fact most huge hp rigs use afe pg7 filters. WHY???

2ppm at 11k miles is going to happen with any filter.
The KN is fine, just make sure you clean/oil it correctly, and most importantly re-install it correctly.
K&N, S&B same concept, so either or.

Agreed...
Often there will be 1 or 2 ppm silicon in the oil right from the factory...so if you see 4, 5 or even 7 you really have nothing to worry about. Silicon usually doesn't begin to cause problems until about 20 ppm (wear metals, or a caution on your UOA)
Biggest thing I have seen with the PG7 (I can't remember where) is that it meets Cummins spec for filtration. Another area where it shines is that in conditions where it is really dusty, the PG7 will hold more than the average performance (including AFE's other models) and continue to do so unitil it really does look like it needs to be clean all the while maintaining its efficiency...I recently looked at one of mine and I can't see any light showing through. THe 24 series AFE 5 layer (inverted end) had more light than i would have liked. Flows like mad though.

ANother filter that matches the PG7 for efficiency is the S@B prgressive 8 layer...I read thorugh their site a while back, and that filter is up there in terms of efficency.
I think biggest thing with aftermarket air filters/intakes is that you need to be proactive and watch your filter. People often read the intstructions and go with the manufacturers recommnedation. Lookin at the standard AFE I had, I wouldn't run that thing without cleaning for any longer than an oem oil interval...let alone 30000-50000 miles
The PG7 on the other hand, I trust.Like everything else, make sure you know what you're using and vigilantly maintain it.
