How many quarts oil change 2007 5.9

I just bought a used 07 Quad Cab 2500 6-spd and changed the oil. I took it to Kwik Kar and they said it took 13 quarts. I checked my manual which stated 12 quarts. He filled it with 12 and showed me that the oil level was not in the safe zone on the dip stick. I said ok and said add a 1/2 quart. Do you all have any advice on this?

Thanks

Good question actually..... I've done a 13 quart change on mine since the first time. I also read somewhere that is what it holds BUT for some reason I was thumbing through the owners manual last time I read 12quarts soooo I done a 12 quart oil change.
I find it hard to get a consistant reading on my stick for some reason? There have been times when it's read on the low end and the next day it'll read normal or even slightly above full. I'm always careful to make sure conditions are the same each time I check the oil level i.e truck level, dip stick seated properly, letters on stick handle upright, etc, etc, etc but I still seem to get different readings from day to day.
Anyway I think that 12 quarts is the proper amount and it's what I'll use from now on. I just wish I could remember where I read 13 quarts?!?!

Make sure they use Diesel engine rated oil, Cj-4 or CI-4. Delo 400, Shell Rotella T, Valvoline Premium Blue, etc. and yes the manual states 12 quarts or 3 gallons. Also, either use a Fleetguard oil filter or a Mopar oil filter which is a fleetguard filter. If you don't use one of those you are asking for trouble.

Thats not necessarily true. A Mobil1 filter is just as good, and more readily available.

I started reading this because I did my oil last night, put 3 gallons in, and it was at the bottom edge of the safe level. I chocked it up to varying dipstick tubes, dipsticks, and an act of god? I'll just have to make a mental note of where it is on the dipstick so I have a reference point.

My 07 5.9 always takes a full 13 quarts with filter, but my 05 would only take 12 quarts with filter. Strange huh?

Yep that's good stuff. 12 qts, including the filter for both of mine.

some of you are saying 12qts with the filter. Does that mean you put 12qts and also fill the filter up and does the filter hold a qt?

I add 12qts. I open a gallon and fill the filter, the rest gets dumped in the engine.

In my truck,12qts is right to the top of the safe zone on the dip stick.
