I use a fleetguard Stratapore filter, it's a 15 micron filter.
I use 3 gals total including the filter. When I bought my truck that's what the service dept told me to do.
I check my oil level after the truck has been sitting for a while, usually first thing in the morning. I takes a while for the oil to drain down to the pan to get an accurate reading. Again, that is also what the service dept told me to do.

I think there is some confusion but the answers have been stated here. It takes awhile for the oil to settle in the pan. That plus the Cummins has a darn long oil pan (darn long engine block) that the SLIGHTEST variation in front to back level of the truck will really throw off the dipstick reading.
Remember, it's better to have a little less oil in the pan than too much oil.

Pre-fill filter and when filter media is done absorbing some of the oil, I install filter
Rest of the 3 gals Premium Blue goes into engine
Level is right where it should be on dipstick

IIRC Dodge has stated that you need to wait at least 15 minutes after the engine is shut off before you check the oil level. Mine takes a total of 12 Qt's of oil including the oil that is in the oil filter.

12 qts including filter.A little under or over the mark on the dipstick is fine,Mobil one filters are not on the approved list for these engines.Cummins does have a approved list of filters.I've seen said list a number of times over the years, even just recent.Use the SEARCH function athread on such ought to be in there. But MOBIL ONE oil filters is not on it.

If you will search this thread you will see this has been brought up and discussed before. I ALWAYS have to buy 3 gal +1 Quart to get mine to register to the full mark on level ground. It may be fiction to some but 13 goes in and 13 comes out and we are right on full every time. Your truck takes whatever it takes to put it on the full mark.........

Yeap, 12 quarts. You can put unlucky #13 in it and it may puck it out somewhere. Crankcase vent tube I would suspect. Overfull is just as bad as underfilled.

Correct, I have always added 1 to the filter, 11 to the crank and it is DEAD ON the full mark on the dip stick. Having said that, my truck is EXTREMELY finiky on the readings based on where you park. The slightest movement either way and it will easily vary a half-1 quart or so!!!
Last night I checked mine after work, I let it sit one hour. It was about a half a quart-1 quart low. I drove it to town, did some shopping, came back and parked it in the exact same spot. Checked after 1 hour and it was dead on Full mark!
