HO fuel mileage

I am considering re-placing my truck with the HO Diesel. Can a few of you people out there tell me what kind of mileage I could expect to get with the HO. I am looking at the following configuration. Dodge 3500, Quad cab, short bed with the 3.73 rear, limited slip, snow plow package. The truck will only tow occasionally so I think I can get away without needing the 4.10 rear.
Any and all responses would be appreciated.

Re:HO fuel mileage

Hey how are things in Morris County? I was raised in Cliffdale Park, near Stephensburg.

Anyway, I have a 2003 HO, six on the floor, 4x4, 3500 , QC dually. I have about 1600 miles on and without towing and a mix of town and 55 mph highway I am getting 17 mpg, and this is up from the earlier. I have the 4.10 .

Re:HO fuel mileage

A search will yield a zillion threads. You'll find they get around 16-20+ unloaded city and highway. My road burner is getting 17 in the city. As expected, mileage falls off with higher speeds/rpms.

I'll second your motion for 3.73's.

I bought mine for its towing ability; the excellent mpg is gravy.

Re:HO fuel mileage

It all depends upon who you ask. Some are reporting very high mileage while others very low. My computer currently shows 18.1 MPG, 188 miles since last reset. This is a mix of city and highway unloaded. I do have the six shooter, HO with the 3:73 gearing. The truck currently has 3400 miles on the odometer. I am personally impressed with the mileage. It does better than my previous 01.5 HO, six shooter with 3:54 gearing did and should only get better when fully broken in.

Re:HO fuel mileage

Like Jonesy said, it depends on who you ask. I'm getting an average (mixed town and highway) of 16.5 on the winter fuel and have 3800 miles on the truck. I like the six shooter really well, even when empty, but it really shines when towing. I also have the 3.73's since most of my driving is when empty, and just didn't need the 4.10's. HTH.

Thanks everybody for the input, I appreciate it.

Mr. Billy. Everything here in Morris County is alright, I suppose. It was just named the richest county in New Jersey, (believe it or not). All I know is that I certainly was not included in that poll!

Re:HO fuel mileage

I have 13,500 plus miles now. (I drive it a lot) Nearly all the miles are highway. 80% empty. I drive 70 to and from work. I am now getting 22-23.6 mpg on the highway only. In town, no idea because I almost never drive in town. I am somehow blessed with more than excellent mileage. I fill up once a week or more and fill till it is absolutely to the neck for accuracy. I accelerate very mellow, I lock on cruise 99% of the time. I've never driven in traffic more than a couple miles. Buy the truck- you'll LOVE it!

'03 HO 6sp QC 2wd, limited slip rear (3.73), snug-top cap:

At 70 (2050 rpm) I get 20-22mpg
At 65 it's around 23.
In town (slow starts and travelling about 1500 rpm), my truck gets 19-21.

Last tow (5000 lbs): 14mpg

Considering my last Ford 460 gasser got 10mpg on a good day, I am, to say the least, extremely pleased. The reason I get "high" milage figures is because I always drive with fuel economy in mind. In my experience, once the Cummins gets much over 2 grand, the fuel economy goes downhill rapidly.

And because I'm fuel conscious, I miss the instantaneous consumption readout - my other vehicle has this option, and one can "learn" to operate in a pretty efficient manner.

Re:HO fuel mileage

I am getting over 19 in the city with moderate driving. You will not need the 4;10 rear end unless you plan to take very heavy loads up long grades on a regular basis. The HO has lots of power. I used to tow with an older CTD at 160 hp and I thought it did well pulling a 34 ft 5er up hills. This engine is awesome! ;D

Re:HO fuel mileage

Some one tell me mine ought to get better please 15 mpg @ 65, easy on take off 3:73 rear, 4800 miles on OD. Is this about right or will it get better. Seems like most everybody gets 17mpg or better. Pulls good though, motor runs excellent and I love this Truck ;D

The only thing that changed the mileage on mine was installing the EZ. I got 17.5 mpg from day 1 and still do at 23k without the EZ. With the EZ, on level 3, I get around 18.7.
