Exclamation HELP, Truck went POP

On my way into the base this morning I noticed that my truck wasn't feeling like it was running right. I was going about 45 in 5th gear and it started jerking a bit. Not knowing what to do at this point I let off the throttle to bring the RPMs down to and idle, and at that point they fell to 500 and back to normal at 3 different times, in a pretty fast matter. While costing I hit the thorttle just to see if it was some sort of fueling issue and when I did something sounded as if it went POP, not a very loud pop but still heard it over Bob & Tom on the radio. I then noticed a bad smell coming from the engine, so i pulled into a little Haji Mart and checked for fluid coming from under the truck and found nothing. No codes are showing up and i can't track down the smell...the rest of the way into the base the truck ran fine and i then checked it again, finding nothing.

I have not the first clue as to what happened, but all I do know is that it NOT supposed to be doing that!

Any thoughts would be great...

Just went and check on my truck, the smell smells like something electrical. Any Thoughts?

I can't help you as to what the problem might be, but if it were MY truck, I think I'd go disconnect the batteries just in case it IS something electrical that doesn't get shut off with the key. Maybe something is shorting out, causing the fuel to get shut off intermittently? Or maybe the main battery cable is shorting out and the pop you heard was an arc?

Ok i'll go and try that out and see what happens. I let it run a few minutes ago and it ran fine but thought that i heard it hiccop once. Hopefully by resetting the computer it will go away.

Just went and ran the truck until it got hot, the only thing i now notice is that when i have the A/C on the smell coming from the vents isn't the most pleasent smell. Truck didn't hiccop once and the RPMs heald steady while at idle.

Could be the A/C compressor dying...it takes a lot of power to turn when the compressor clutch engages, and if the bearings are going it'll take a lot more.

ohh and it was the A/C compressor dying...the pop i heard was it blowing it's seal. I only found this out yesterday when i went to charge my A/C system back up bc the air had gotten hot in the past few days. When it wouldn't take any freon* I knew it either had a blockage or something quit working, so low and behold the compressor was shot. I guess the dead give away would have been the oil/freon mixture on my front axel.

Called the parts store and it's $380 for a new one plus a $10 core charge.

Looks like only 4 bolts and a few hoses, any tricks?

Most parts places won't honor any warranty if you don't also replace the filter dryer and pull a suction on the system prior to charging it. Might want to look into that.

Glad you found the problem tho!
