Fuel Filter Question (Mopar or Fleetguard?)
Fuel Filter Question (Mopar or Fleetguard?)
I'm about to change my fuel filter for the first time and my DC parts guy is telling me that the specs on the Fleetguard FS19579 may not be the same as the Mopar. In other words not "up to" Dodge specs. He says the Fleetguard is more of a universal filter designed for a broader range including tractors etc. and that it just happens to fit. He said that the colour of the material inside is different (micron differences??) and that when unrolled the mopar had slightly more material (a test I think he said they did in this dealership shop??). He also said that one of their service managers who tends to be somewhat "cheap" has used Fleetguards but has replaced 3 lift pumps and eventually the fuel pump. He has been a helpful, friendly, knowledgeable guy but I am certainly more than a bit surprised to hear this one! Any comments, ideas or suggestions?
Ummmm, Mopar filters are Fleetguard.
At least the oil filters are, pretty sure the fuel filters are as well.
Only difference is price.
Betcha you can guess which one is double to 3 times the price of the other.

Is that the right part number?
Shouldn't it be FS19579? or do the 3rd gen's use a different cartridge?

I wouldn't trust him. The Mopar filter is just a reboxed Fleetguard. Unless his selling the filter to you for $12 I would buy them from Geno's Garage.
Also, the lift pumps are upstream from the filters, so the filter has nothing to do with the lift pump failures.

I don't know if they are the same or not, but I just replaced mine with a Fleetguard and after 12K miles, the filer looked pretty clean.
BTW, I think they had the gorilla working when they put the filter in mine because it was torqued way past the 25ft/lbs the cap shows.

The stock filter was exactly the same as the Fleetguard I put in, same markings. Looked like coal at 9,300.
I'm sure Dodge uses the lowest bidder. I've heard the oil filters vary in apperance from time to time. Another forum reported a made in france stamp.
