From what I've read, the problem was the valve material (rubber or neoprene if I remember correctly). That material disintegrated in some 2nd Gen CTDs; clogged up the oil galleys resulting in engine seizure. Fram changed the valve material to silicone after Dodge and Cummins determined the source of the problem.

Monkey Lips, You're right on the Fram using neoprene. Fram paid up and made good on their warranty. The Wix had filter media come loose and clogged the piston cooling jets resulting in the same damage. They also paid for the damaged engines.
Sloppy, You're still wrong. I used the correct Fram part number on the Neon. It didn't have a check valve. To even suggest that the lack of a check valve would cause the filter to buldge and deform shows a lack of knowledge on your part. What's the restriction with or without a check valve?
I've owned four Dodge Cummins pickups since '95. I owned other diesels and gas burners before them. I have a bit of knowledge about the 12v, 24v and ISBe to share. And now a fair comparison with the Hemi in a duplicate truck otherwise. It appears you've just recently bought your first if that's even true. Your comment about the buldging filter shows a total lack of knowlede of even the basics. And you're going to give me a hard time for even being here?

This is almost as good as a regular oil war . Sloppy, your wasting your time trying to justify Fram filters to us. Most of us are strictly Fleetguard users and the rest fall somewhere in the middle. In addition, you will most likely not find a Fram lover on this, or any other Dodge/CTD site. Furthermore, you comments regarding oil filters along with those directed towards members of this board remind myself why I change my own oil.

All I can say here is "if you buy cheap, you get cheap". The oil filter is the engine's biggest line of defense. Give it the biggest fighting chance you can.

Sloppy, you assume we don't know what we're talking about. We do. It's well documented. A check valve in a filter is not a pressure relief bypass valve. Not all filters have check valves. Frams lack check valves in a few that I'm aware of including the Cummins and Chrysler applications.
When, where and how has even one Fleetguard filter failed and caused damage to a Cummins engine. I was a member of the TDR for almost ten years until I came over here. Not one case of a Fleetguard filter failure reported. People love to whine and cry when their truck is damaged. We would have heard all about it.
Yes Fram and Wix fessed up and paid for the damage they caused. My hat's off to them for that. K&N's warranty spells out that they will not be responsible for any damages directly or indirectly as a result of the use of their air filter. There has been damage reported and they don't pay. I don't use them.
We knew the facts before we bashed Fram. It's not because they're orange. I kinda like their looks.
Me lighten up? I'm not ashamed of my Hemi. It does it's job very well. Poke all you want. I was told on the job I could get some ointment at Walgreens for that Hemi I was sittin' on. It's the insinuation that we just fell off the turnip truck and know nothing of what we speak that causes friction.

Your wrong there "oil guy". Fleetguard does make some Fram filters and some Wix filters. That is a FACT! I'm not sure if it is for our application but they do make some. So try not to spread that "BS" around. The uninformed might believe you. I'm glad you're not a doctor!

AC Delco is on the approved list. It also rates very high in filter tests. I've never used one but I wouldn't hesitate to.

Hannibal thanks !!
I bought a case of ACDelco's PF1070F on ebay (a case) pretty cheap.
Worked out to be about $5 per filter. Should last me years !!
I'm glad they are on the approved list
Thanks Again

Last year I put a Fram on my truck and after about 2000 miles, the filter split down the side. I lost about a gallon of oil on my driveway. I sent it back to Fram (Honeywell) and they said it was my fault that it ruptured! It did have a small dent in the side that I put in it when removing it with a strap wrench. I have since checked the metal thickness of a Fram versus other more robust filters (by pressing it with my thumb) and there is a BIG difference! The Fram housing is much thinner than a Wix or Fleetguard.

I did the deal with two oil and one fuel because I didn't know if they (Delco) were approved, seller said they were, but I was going to wait and see for myself. Fuel filter is stated as "The fuel filter incorporates the new Stratapore media technology for better water seperation" this will be my first fuel filter change, he offers some pretty good deals.

If you want to see what's inside and possibly who's right or wrong go to this page on the TDR and scroll down to sample article filter expose' issue 32. It will show you the differences inside the filters and answer a lot of questions.
