Fram oil filters

Just got this 96 2500 with 5.9 cummins from my son. I have heard some about the "Wix" oil filters also the "Fleetgard" oil filter. I'm changing the oil in the morning using Delvac 1300 oil. They told me that the Fram filter was a very good oil filter. I need to know before I install this filter if I'm makeing a mistake. Please help.

The best filter you can get is the Fleetguard Stratapore from your local Cummins shop/dealer. Wix or Napa Gold filters are pretty good. Fram is total garbage. Delvac 1300 is fine, but Valvoline Premium Blue has a higher TBN, has moly & boron (super anti-wear additives). It is made by Valvoline per Cummins specs. I feel it's the best CI-4 organic oil you can buy. Schuck's/Checker/Krager? sell it for 7.49/gal. Plus there is a $5.00 rebate on 2 gal.

You'll hear a lot about Fram on here, but not much of it will be positive. Do a search for Fram and you'll see what I mean.

I think you will find that a Cummins parts house will be a bit cheaper than the dodge dealer, and Geno's will be cheaper yet for Fleetguard...

As Jack predicted, I would have to say personally I won't ever run a Fram.

All you have to do is cut open a Fram and you'll see why you will never want to use one...POS!

flip through your owners manual and you'll probably see in there somewhere that DC can void your warrenty for using a fram filter. and if you go to wally world and flip throught the fram filter book, they will say it is ok.

i have used fram for years, changed my oil 2 months ago, put on a fram, after reading this thread the other morning, I called geno's and ordered a stratapore for less than $10. I will replace the filter as soon as it arrives.
the price diff between the fram and stratapore was about $4. worth it to me.

I'll use a fram if i'm stuck and need one "now" but it's not my first choice. I use mostly wix or fleetgard.

Strange folks won't use a Fram but will use Wix. They're both guilty of destroying Cummins engines the same way. Neither is on Cummins or DC's approved filters list.
Yeah I know it was over ten yrs ago but I wouldn't take my ex wife back either.

WIX is a quality filter wheras the FRAM is not! Both had problems at one point in the cummins. I cut open a relatively new fram (about a month old) on a 350 chevy and the filter media had fallen apart and was a mass of fuzzy looking cardboard at the bottom. Last fram I ran on a motor I cared about. I did run one on a motor that I was rulling in 2 weeks a few months ago when I was trying to get the gunk out of it. I had it on the shelf and didnt care if the engine blew. Just my experience. My dad loves them and puts FRAM on everything. To each there own I guess. I will stick with filters from cummins and dino oil till I move to a colder climate. I am in the military and looking at Iceland in a little over a year more than likely. Block heater cord and synthetics are in the future!!

Not strange to me. I have personaly cut both open. I have no filter technology training, but I would be VERY supprised if anyone that has cut a Fram open would be willing to use one.

I have said this before The Fleetguard plant here makes some Fram filters and some Wix filters and some Napa filters. My wife works there and said they all come off the same line just different paint and boxes. After reading here I'm having her check to see what applications they are for, whether they are for our trucks. So the "Wix is good Fram is junk" just doesn't fly. They're actually only 2 or 3 filter makers, it's kind of like batteries there aren't many people that make them just put different names on them. I've seen the list of filters Cummins suggest but don't understand them not supporting a filter that their company makes (Cummins owns Fleelguard)? I'm sure Stratapore is a different media than the others.

I'm sure that you are correct about many different filters being manufactured at just a few locations, but I am also absolutely positive that the internals are made to different specifications. Once cut open, a Wix is RADICALLY different from a Fram. I stand by my previous post. I would be supprised to find anyone that has actually cut open a Fram that is willing to use one on a $ 35,000 truck.
