biggest tire for 17" rim

I know this isn't the first time this has been addressed in these forums, but I wanted to get some of your experiences with bigger tires on a stock 17X8 rim. I have been told that I can't run anything larger than a 285, but I am thinking differently. The ideal tire (for me) would be a lot taller than what I see on current trucks. It seems the trend now is not only to run taller tires, but wider ones too. Back in the day, you could buy tires that were essentially the same width as what was stock, but a lot taller. That is what I am looking for. Any suggestions?

My dad runs Toyo MT 35 x 12.5 on stock 17" rims.

The comments his tire shop told him is that the 35 x 12.5 is the largest tyre that could be put on there. The problem is not so much the OD, its the width.
A really wide tire on a stock 7.5-8.5" rim is terrible for handling & tire wear. you cannot fully inflate them & the side loading on them causes them to be very balloon like.

Those are just my .02

i'm running 37''x12.50 on my stock 17" rim BFG AT's on a 6" suspension and 3" body lift.

I need a different rim though to get some backspacing because I still rub a bit at full lock .

The look is a toss up ,some guys think they should stick out further from the truck while others like the tucked in look .

I like it but I think a little wider stance would be good

Most tire manufacturer specs on anything bigger than 285/70Rxx show minimum wheel width at 8.5". I ran BFG 315/70R/17s on stock 17x8 wheels for 52k miles. The slightly narrower wheel width than recommended did cause some cupping wear because I ran the with enough air pressure for the Cummins.

I have seen a lot of 35x12.50x17s and a few 37s on the stock 17x8 wheels and other than a little premature center wear, I have not seen any tires popping off wheels.

As far as taller and not wider selection is pretty limited as far as I know.

I'm running 37's on my stock rims and haven't had any major issues. I've been towing, offroading, driving around cities, and in tight parking lots...point is, nothing has phased them.

They have, however, come out of balance pretty bad, and as I'm here nearing the end of the life of my tires I can no longer rotate them. I have to run a certain 2 on the front and the other 2 on the rear...if I do otherwise they (the two bad tires, which are on the rear) cause a bad vibration...it's simply how they wore down. maybe that's what attributed to the fact that I'm about to drop major coin to have new lower and upper ball joints installed

maybe that wouldn't be an issue if I had a wider rim, but for now, no one makes an aftermarket rim with the correct backspacing and offset.

I'll still buy 37's when I get new tires

HOWEVER, the smaller the tire you run (by that I mean closer to the stock size) the less wear and tear on your front end. and in the end the larger tires will catch up with you, and your wallet.

lastly, I would not try and run an offsize tire without steering stablizers...to high a chance of death wobble.

What about a 305/65/17. Gottem in the shed now for 3 months after my wheel deal went south and I'm thinking of running those on the stockers instead.

I have no problems with my 305's.
I like the looks.
After these wear out I am going to get the 35's with a 1" front lift...just enough to clear the rub but keep the "rake" look.

there are quite a few aftermarket wheels with 6+" b/s and pos. offset for running big tires without a big lift.

I have run 35/12.5/17s and 37x12.5/17 on stock wheels with no problems.

I now run H2 wheels for better backspacing.

Just bought some H2 315/70/17 BFG AT KO's on my stockers and they really ride nice. Running 45psi in them at the moment.

for E rated tires alot of people run the 35x12.5x17's
