Antifreeze ?

Hi all, I just noticed I need to add some. I also know Dodge recommends their fancy stuff. The question I have is can I use some Prestone that I already have? On the bottle it states it can be mixed with any color and any make. What do ya think?

NO! They are different types of coolant.

The coolant must be "HOAT" compatible/compliant. Zerex G-05 is the only commercially available HOAT coolant on the street. I have found it at Pepboys hear (just stocking up as it seems to be much rarer than anything else). Others have said Napa sells it too. The other choice is buyer the Mopar stuff from a dealer. Some have said the MOPAR is really Zerex G-05 with a little more dye in it. Use the search function on here and "HOAT" for more information.

As I understand it, HOAT shouldn't be mixed with any other type.

On the Zerex web page, they say that Dodge has been using it as their factory fill (Dyed orange). Their G-05 is kind of a gold color.

Napa does sell the Zerez G-05. I just picked some up yesterday, but I had to ask for it. Wasn't on the shelf, and the parts guy had to go digging for it in the back. Most of them don't seem to know what it is. I went to the napa website and got the napa part number for it.

OK, I picked up some Zertex G-05. I just wanted to be on the safe side. The Prestone bottle didn't specifically say it had the magic in it so I decided not to use it. Thanks everyone for the input.

Its not a good idea to use non HOAT coolant in your cooling system. Also make sure you used distilled water not tap water. If you must use non HOAT coolant they say to flush it out the non HOAT as soon as you can as its not that good for your cooling system.

It's funny, I never used the "HOAT" coolant in my KW or Mack. The KW had a Cummins. I think Dodge creates these special formulas so they can sell their brand at an inflated cost.

As long as the coolant is formulated for use in a diesel engine with additives to prohibit corrosion of the aluminum parts in the cooling system it will suffice.

Both of my semi truck had over 600,000 miles on them when I sold them without any problems from the radiator or coolant system.

Dodge didn't just make up the HOAT formulas just to sell high prices antifreeze. You did know that several manufactures have requires the use of HOAT coolant for several years now? Because of that requirement Zerex makes and sells G-05 HOAT coolant.

Buying a gal or so from your dealer won't break you and you will KNOW that you used the right stuff. I bought 2 gal from my dealer last weekend for appx 40.00 and 2 gal of distilled water and drained 4 gal off my system to rejuvinate it after 5 years of the OE stuff in there. Runs cooler now with the right stuff in there with NO compatibility issues. On a 40K truck it ain't worth worrying about saving 10.00 on some coolant.....

They don't require it, they recommend it... big difference. This isn't a break your warranty thing here. There are plenty of non-HOAT anti-freeze products out there that perform as well as or better. As long as it is designed with the special needs of a diesel in mind, it will work.

I just hate to see people preach the mandatory use of something that costs a bit more when another cheaper option is out there. We all don't have big wallets.

From what I've read, the chemistry of HOAT doesn't break down as quickly, allowing a 5 year change, where they recommended a 2 year change with the traditional stuff.

Your correct not every on has big wallets and neither do I, but by using non recommend/cheap coolant it can cost you a lot more in the long run then using the recommend coolant that cost a bit more then the cheap stuff. It's your truck and you can use what you want but don't expect cheap coolant to last and protect your cooling system for 5 years like HOAT coolant will.
