Always a good idea to change your fuel filter...

Are you guys refering to the dark color of the element or debris on the filter?
Every filter I've changed on my cummins comes out black like the one shown and I double filter all my fuel and change out every 5000kms.
It has been something I've questioned every time though.

The blackness is normal. What you're seeing is the filter catching "asphaltites" in the fuel. If the filter stays pretty clean you're either using pre-filtered fuel (a good thing!) or the filter isn't doing it's job (a bad thing!). I change mine every other oil change.

Good to know it wasnt that nasty afterall, or that they are all like that
Just running ole #2, probably start using a additive though, with the low sulfer bs...
You musta bought that truck all original (as in original filter).
I used to change mine at 10K and never saw anything like that. She's pretty dirty. Feels good to get a new filter on when you realize that you had a nasty one in there.

A dirty non bypass filter will filter smaller material out of the fluid than a new filter. The only real way to know when it's time to change a non bypass filter is with a pressure gauge.
The black color is natural for a diesel fuel filter.
That being said it sure looks like it was time to change it.

The first time I changed my fuel filter it was like the example shown above. Really yucky!!!! That was after using a lot of US diesel. Every change after that, using Mexican diesel, the filter has come out white and clean. In fact, the filters have looked so clean that I have even debated on reusing them for a few more thousand miles. Always used the Fleetguard FS 19579.
