14cm Non-WG Housing = Good Idea or Bad Idea?

I noticed you can get 14cm non-WG housings for fairly cheap. Is there any danger in overspooling the stock turbo with one of these? Would I have to be careful or worry about damaging anything?

I used to have 14 non gated and with stock injectors 2 turns on the full fuel bhaf cold air intake and a diced fuel pin it worked awesome. max boost was around 27 temp never went over 1000 even when I hauled the trailer. If you are looking for one i got one to sell because i put in bigger injectors and with a non gated 14 i would have grenaded the turbo. PM me if you are interested

I think you'll be fine, I'm running a non-WG 12cm and have no problems, my max boost is 32psi. I've been thinking that a 14cm would be ideal for my towing needs.

I'm seeing about the same - 32lbs max boost with a 12Cm non-w/g housing, but I'll soon be installing a wastegated housing.

I ran a non-WG 14 for over a year. I could hit 40psig in the blink of an eye. On a long hard pull, I could slowly creep up to 1350 but that was not easy.

Only difficulty is, the exhaust flange sticks out about an extra inch. May require a little modification to your down pipe or some firewall massaging.

Thanks for all the responses.

I noticed a few of you are running HX35's with your non-WG housings. Doesn't the HX35 have a MAP slot that protects it against overspooling?

Either way, it sounds like I shouldn't have a problem running one with my stock turbo. Guess I'll have to order one up!

Wait, I thought only the wastegated housings required moving the exhaust? Isn't the non-WG 14cm the same length as my stock 18cm housing?

The 16 CM and up has the same Exhaust flange. Anything 14 and lower wether waste gated or not has the longer flange.
I ran a 14 nonwaste gated for a while, It works good with stock injectors, and not too much fuel. I can hit 33 PSI boost with a 16, stock injectors with pump mods.
A 14 is OK if you plan on minor mods and staying with it, If you plan on turning it up later it will only be a stepping stone.
Good luck with the mods.

The MWE slot helps prevent surging under low RPM/high boost conditions. The stock H1C did not have an MWE because the turbine housings and pump settings didn't allow high boost - and especially not at low RPM. An MWE slot will have no effect on overspooling.

A 14 cm non-gated housing is nice on an intercooled truck, but only if you are keeping the stock injectors. Bigger injectors will quickly show up the need for a bigger housing or a wastegate.

If you can find a used 12 cm wastgated off a 2nd gen for cheap, I would do that instead of the 14. Better spoolup, plus no worries about overspooling until you have a lot of fuel.

Geez, guess I was real confused about that slot.

I definitely don't plan on getting bigger injectors and think I found myself a 14cm non-WG housing from a fellow DTR member for a decent price. I'm going to give that a shot and see how she does.

BTW - I installed my 3200 spring today! Power is incredible and I gained almost 2psi, but I think that has something to do with my fuel screw being in another 1/2 turn or so. Gotta thank you guys for talking me into it. Definitely made the truck much more driveable.
