I am getting a 14cm non-wg housing and want to have everything needed for the install when it arrives. I know I have to move the exhaust about 1" back, but other than that will this unit bolt right up?

 

Yes, it will fit like it grew there. Get a new flange gasket and oil return gasket, they are around $5 at Dodge for both. Just lie to 'em and tell 'em it's for an '02.

 

The non-WG housing won't require you to move the downpipe back, fwiw.

 

Sorry to disagree with you there, Greg, but the non gated 12's and 14's are made off the same castings as their 'gated brethren - they just don't have the passage drilled or mechanisms installed. They take up just as much space and the exhaust still needs to be moved.

Your post above got me thinking (and that can be dangerous for all involved ), if the casting is there can one just drill the hole and drill/tap for a wastegate/boost controller like most of you guys are running?

When Im going to change an exhaust housing. I just loosen the oil drain clamp down on the hose and pull the drain tube with the turbo. I guess im a bit lazy, I hate to scrape that drain gasket, it can be a pain.

 

I'm curious to! Has any one converted a non waste gate 14-12 to a waste gate? is there part available to do this?

 

I have yet to see a WG housing close-up in person, but it seems if they are from the same casting and a boost controller takes the place of a stock WG, it should be possible.

Yes, there's a shaft and a flapper inside. It could be done pretty easily by someone competent with a milling machine.

 

So you could just drill a hole were the flaper valve sets?

Also, does a boost controller replace that stock wastegate/flapper, or are those two different components?

 

AFAIK the housings are totally different in the area necessary for the WG valve. There is an added cover with 5 bolts that covers the WG hole and the ducting back to the exhaust port. The cover also has the flange for the downpipe or in later models an angle turndown that clamps to the downpipe.

It would take more work than it's worth to convert a NON-WG housing into a WG housing and it probably wouldn't last long because of the heat.
