Adjusting Valves

Hi there,

I have some noisy valves in my 2003, jsut wondering if any of you have adjusted them yourself? Not to sure how hard or techincal it is, would rather do it myself and save the money but might be one of those things where its better to let someone who does it all the time to do it.

Advice please

Thanks

Did mine afew weeks ago using the write up I found on this site. Was actually very easy and my truck now runs smoother and quieter. I have never adjusted valves on a diesel before, so I was a little nervous. But I took my time, followed the directions, and everything went OK.
Two tips for you:
First, cover the air conditioner coils with a stiff piece of cardboard. Make sure it will not move as you lay across it to reach all the valves. The fins bend very easily and they are a pain in the back side to straighten.
Second, A good set of off-set feeler gage's work better then the straight blades. I only had the straight blades, so I bent them to fit.

Thats it...Good Luck and you will be fine

Good tip on the bent feeler gauges. I adjusted the valves on this motor the first time a few months ago. Took about 50 min from opening the hood to shutting it. I love how easy these beasts are to work on, so much room in there. The number 6 valves are a little tricky, but the right length deepwell socket made it pretty simple.

Just follow the steps, take your time and do it! It's pretty darn straight forward.

Thanks for your help, looks pretty simple when you think about it. Remember doing the on my old beater toyota years ago. In the pics I can't see the Jam nut in the Pic's on the exhaust side? Just curious if its in a different location?

Are you adjusting the jam nut for the intake first then adjusting the same nut for the exhaust, kinds seems to sounds that way. Guess you are trying to achieve the average? I am confused not seeing jam nuts of the exhaut side

The camshaft and thus the pushrods and adjusting screws and nuts are all on the driver side of the engine.

Woodchuck61,

Yes I realize that they are all on the drivers side, just curious if I should find to jam nuts on one rocker arm or just the one. Meaning after setting the intake clearance can I torque that jam nut or can I expect to adjust the same jam nut for the exhaust clearance. If I saw it would be make sense, just can picture how you will get .010 on the intake after adjusting to acheive the exhaust specs?

There is one Jam nut per set of valves. They are tied together at the top of each set of exhuast or intake valves. You will place the feeler gage under the tip of the rocker on top of the do-hickey that connects the valves together and adjust the allen key bolt in the middle of the lock nut. Once the gap is correct, hold the allen key bolt stationary while you tighten the Jam nut. Check it with a tourque wrench.

Do-Hickey: Red neck term for some thing you forgot the name of....
