Don't know about him, but I use the Lucas that comes in the clear plastic bottle. The stuff in the white bottle is labeled "Oil Stabilizer". The clear bottle stuff is the fuel additive. It's labeled to use 3 oz for 10 gallons. That's what I use. Wally World is the cheap source for it.

IIRC it’s called Lucas upper cylinder lube with injector cleaner and fuel conditioner. On their web site www.lucasoil.com they call it Lucas Fuel Treatment. It comes in 5.25 oz, Qt and one gallon bottles. I buy it by the gallon at Napa for about $30.00 with tax, as my local Wally world no longer carries it. Also they are the only one I know of that does not have Solvents in their fuel additive.

I use 16 oz PSD and 8 oz of MMO. Seems to start easier and run smoother, not gonna claim any better mpg cause I just don't see it. I would stay away from 2 stroke oil, If you're gonna put something in there, put something thats made for the purpose. Just my .02 worth.

Bio

I was putting about 5% bio in mine, have recently upped it to 20%. Since I can it free at this point, other than a little time helping make it, I can't argue with it.

I bought my truck used in jan. with 90,000 miles. After using PS 4-5 tanks I averaged 14.5 mpg. Then I switched to lucas & after a couple tanks went to 16.5 mpg. I think the lucas did a better job of cleaning the fuel system & therefore the increase in milage. In my experience I think it would be wise to use an injector cleaner on a regular basis, but not necesarily every tank. Something with lubricating qualities in every tank would be a good idea though. I wouldn't put anything in the tank that wasn't designed to go in it. All mpg hand calculated. Now with or w/o additive still 16+ mpg.

I'm not sure that ATF has the same chemical properties as the dye in off-road diesel fuel. I've ran ATF before in my company truck(D-Max) due to injectors hanging BAD and fuel knocking and smoking. It would unhang them every time. Then we started running the Caterpillar fuel conditioner and we've stopped having injector problems out of the D-Maxes. A Tx DPS officer I know said that they have some new equipment on their DOT trucks. They can/will be able to come up behind you on the highway and be able to tell if you're running dyed fuel without pulling you over and testing the tank. He explained it as being a "sniffer" on the front bumper and the control system in the cab. He also said that the fine of $10,000 + $1000 per gallon was going to be increased to $20,000 and $1000 per gallon.....OUCH!!!.. And everybody wonders how Texas can afford to have such nice paved roads...!!!

Some say run on addatives but diesel shop told me that low sulfer is the reason that my lift pump failed after 4 weeks. And that they are having alot of problems with fuel leaks becouse the fuel is "dry"?

ATF & Mineral Spirits?

I have been watching these threads on additives for a long while and thought now's the time to add my .02; For what it's worth, I was told this is a good mixture from a pretty good source. Cummins triained tech. Cummins said to mix 8oz of ATF and 8oz of mineral spirits and pour it into a full tank (for an 01' CTD). This lubricates the lift pump and helps break down debris that can be found in the fuel. Alledgedly, the "debris" or little chunks of crap that come in the fuel from the refinery are the culprit for the high failure rate of LPs. This is what I heard....I know nothing. Any thoughts? BTW- I have run my truck on this mixture for a couple thousand miles. Runs fine, but nothing big. Been using MMO and that seems to enrich the driving experience. Runs smoother.

I've used MMO with out any problems in my truck. I sure as heck would not use AFT being it has additives in it that can screw up injectors. FYI Power Service has Naphtha in it and that is what paint thinner, ligher fluid and mineral spirits are made from.

I saw a thread by some oil "experts" on another forum that said the last thing you should be dumping in there is ATF because refiners add friction modifiers and other chemicals in there that are designed specifically not to burn and over time it can be bad for your injectors. I don't know if mineral spirits qualify as a solvent or if they are a lubricant? I know solvents are a big for injectors. Howes doesn't have them and now I see Lucas doesn't either. Most additives use solvents for injector "cleaner" part.

Never use modern ATF in todays diesels. It does not burn completely and is not designed for todays tight tolerance diesel engine. It contains a much more comlex additive package.

Ok I have read it all is it worth anything to run any kind of additive or is it a waste of time and money.
