Additive
Even though you may not heard of it (but being your a city officer you may not know much about it) they do spot checks in at live stock sales, local fairs and other palces and bet the do so in your state too.
One additive I have never heard mentioned here is Startron. I have used Starbrite products before and found them to be good quality. I am going to give some of this a try out of curiosity. http://www.starbrite.com/sproductdetail.cfm?ID=1538
I looked at the URL of the Chevron PDF and see that the Centane they had listed has dropped down from 49-55 in 2004 to 43-47 in 2006, that is a drop of between 6 and 8 Centane points and that drop does hurt our mileage. I also wonder how much the fuel they produce has a Centane above 43. I noticed thay also did not list the BUT/lb numbers.
IIRC Bosch has always wanted a minimum of 50 Centane for our fuel (in the EU it runs between 55 and 60 Centane with the minimum of 50 Centane) and I have seen a lot fuel in the USA that is down in the 40-42 range. The best fuel I can get in my area is listed as 42-46 depending on location. Also I can tell when the Centane is up near the 45-46 range by engine performance and mileage. IMHO any thing below the 50 Centane that Bosch wants our fuel to be at is Bull **** and lets Big oil make more $$ by producing and giving us poor fuel to burn.

40 Centane is a bunch of Bull Crap when Bosch wants us to have 50 Centane minium like they do over the big pond in the EU. Over there they also have a lower fuel system scare wear of 460 and here in the USA our scare wear is up at 520 and LSD IIRC was in the 325 range so you can see this new ULSD fuel has a lot less lube to it for pre 6.7L/2007.5 engines and way to low of a Centane rateing. Making low 40 Centane fuel is much cheaper for big oil to make then 50 minium Centane we should have and the price we pay you would think we would have 60 Centane fuel.

Cummins Fuel Recommendation:
A Cetane rating of 40 is recommended at temperatures above 32 degrees
A Cetane rating of 45 is recommended at temperatures below 32 degrees.
^^^ interesting-- I can't say I know what the "numbers" mean to me. But I can say the 40 cetane sticker on the pump I referenced above was at a Chevron station.
I do notice different-- and significant-- mileage differences when I get diesel at different places. Having said that, the most consistent and highest mileage I have noticed has been from-- you guessed it-- Chevron. It seems conterintuitive.

I noticed this Disclaimer at the bottom of the Chevron PDF that said these values are typical ranges for reference only. So one can only guess how often they produce quality 43-47 Centane fuel. BTW the Centane numbers that are listed in the PDF is higher then what I saw last summer posted on Chevron diesel pumps when I used their fuel while in Oregon, ID and WA.
