48RE indicator doesnt show when in 1st gear

Hello all,

I noticed a problem this weekend with my truck. The transmisson shifts fine, but if I drop the lever down to 1st gear, I dont get a square aroudn first on the indicator. The tranny is in first gear and will hold there, but the indicator shows 2nd. if I wiggle the lever it will sometimes show 1st and will sometimes go to first if I drive it a little with the lever in the 1st gear position.

The tranny seems to be working fine, it just doesnt show the square around the 1st on the indicator. I also had one instance where it showed reverse, but seemed to be in nuetral. That was a one time incident. I moved the lever slightly, and then it was in reverse.

I am thinking of taking it in for warranty, but was curious if any of you had this problem. Is it a problem with the indicator or shift lever, or is this something that is going on within the tranny?

doubt it is the tranny, although it should not go into first unless you are under a certain speed. most likely the contacts for the shifter indicator are miss aligned. if under warranty take it in, if can be adjusted great or cluster replacement.

Experienced, the same lack of 1st gear indication with a similar truck to yours. Interested in knowing how it turns out for you.

same here. Thought it could be the cold weather, but it happened during the summer as well.

The indicator lights are controled by the range position sensor on the side of the transmission. Needs a little tweak or cleaning. Mine periodically won't light around neutral or park unless I move the shifter.

Wow. I hate that so many others have the same problem, but it is nice to hear that I am not alone in this issue. I just hate dropping my truck off for warranty work to the dealer. It just seems like sometimes they come back with more problems than before when people start digging in the dash.

mine did the same thing-but in drive. it was my cable- i had recently converted my 3rd gen fuel filter canister over to a 2nd gen fuel canister-so the location of the canister was different- the cable was getting hung up from the lack of slack. moved the cable some what-now it is fine

Its most likely your linkage from your shifter to your valve body, make sure you get it corrected as soon as possible, it could be slowly moving and when not adjusted right will make your forward clutches recieve a little pressure while your in park and burn them up, it happened to me a few times!

Do NOT let them dig in the dash. The problem is at the transmission. Make them do it right.

Looks like I fixed it....for now.

I got under the truck and saw where the cable come into the tranny. I moved it from first to second a couple times by hand, and wiggled all of the connections. It works now........
