auto trans gear indicator won't show P

Saturday night I got home (it was snowing, if it matters), backed into the driveway, and shifted into Park but the indicator only would go as far left as [R]. I tried moving the lever down and back up, and it would change fine in reverse and below, it just wouldn't go over to [P]. Next morning, same thing. Had to start it in [N]. Then I drove for just a few miles and all was well again. What happened?

Yes the snow did mater , it started out sounding like just the indicator, but then you said that you had to start in nutrial , my guess would be some snow-ice buildup in linkage at trans. thats assuming that it wasn't shifting into the gears not just the indicator.
And if its working ,than remeber " if its not broke don't fix it " --- mod it .

The transmission was actually behaving correctly. It just wouldn't indicate any further left than [R]!

I would recommend having the linkage adjusted. You don't want it to run you over the one time you walk away from it and it pops out of park and into reverse or neutral in between. It took my dealer about 1.5 mins to adjust it. no big deal!

I think there is a TSB on this. Mine did it before my tranny was rebuilt and if I'm tired and lazy sometimes it hangs just before it drops into P but it will always go into T. Getter adjusted. ks

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd prefer to adjust it myself rather than mess w/ the dealer. Any tips?

from what I saw when mine was adjusted he unhooked something under the dash and slid under the truck and then back up top to see how it felt. I wouldn't see a prob doing it yourself. I just don't know exactly what he did.
