I have a 2004 and I first use a fleetgaurd oil filter # LF16035. It has a flutted bottom. then all it takes is to use a filter socket with a long extention and reach it from underneath. thats all there is to it. I am assuming that the 05 would be the same as the 04.

You can get a filter socket at Walmart, Napa, etc... Your '05 should hold 12 quarts total. 11 in the crankcase and 1 in the filter. -Steve

This tool works great, and won't slip on very tight filters (like the one the factory installs) like a filter socket can.

Quite sturdy and adjustable so very likely the last filter wrench you would ever need to buy. $12 at local Sears. Very happy with the one I have.

Rocky in KC, where are you at in KC. I'm in the south metro Belton/Raymore area. I use a 6" extension on my ratchet with a filter socket. I've purchased Valvoline Premium Blue Oil & Fleetguard oil & fuel filters from Cummins on Parvin Rd. by Worlds of Fun. I've just discovered that my local Advance Auto Parts carries the Valvoline Prem. Blue oil also for a bit less and they're closer so I'll be buying from them from now on. Let me know if you need any further info.

Congrats on the new truck, what dealer did you buy from?

Later
Eric

Also, don't forget you need a tool to unscrew the plug to let the old oil out. I'm not sure, but I think there's a 3/8" square hole in it.

Yup. The end of a 3/8" extension or ratchet fits right in there.

I just use a strap wrench on mine. I put it on a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and extentions. I find that diconceting the A/C compressor wire helps make room. They where smart and put a quick disconect on the wire rite where it needs to be seperated at. It just takes a bit to figure out how the connector comes apart.

i had an old steel KD tools socket from my old 6.5TD tahoe and 6.2na gm's... it works great. that and a 12" long extension and just get it from the bottom. the first filter will be super tight. after that, they will be ok since you are tightening them instead of some machine

Many thanks to all who replied, new truck coming soon, and I want to be able to get the first oil change in at around 2000 miles.
