2004.5 dies when accelerating

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site and in advance I would like to thank anyone that is willing to help out. I can not get to work and I need this thing fixed like yesterday...Been using girlfreind's car for the last 3 days and that avenue has been exhausted.

2004.5 5.9 3500

The truck falls flat on it's face as soon as I press the pedal. It will idle all day long perfectly. The only code I'm getting is for the fan clutch; 0468 I believe and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Research suggests that this code is suspiciously correspondent to the lift pump failing.

I have the FASS direct replacement lift pump here and it will be installed tomorrow. Thanks to Geno's garage for super fast shipping!

My experience with gasoline engines is very good but I'm in uncharted waters with this DIESEL BEAST.

If this doesn't work what else should I replace or check?..water in fuel, TPS, MAP, CP3?

Thanks,
Chuck

Fuel pump is shot. Been down the same road 3 times with mine, until I finally stuck a pump between the fuel lines.

And the fan speed code, has nothing to do with it. All that means is the clutch isn't spinning fast enough or at all to what the ECM is programmed.

One other way to make sure it's the fuel pump is toss a catch pan under the fuel filter bowl drain and open it. Turn the key on, then bump the starter. If it's nothing more than a trickle, bad pump.

The pump winds up nice with key on. I think it's making enough pressure to just keep the CP3 supplied for idle requirement.

Just for S & G I'll do a flow test on it. Flow should be about 1 quart/30seconds, right?

Was just checking to see if he would catch that, and not let it fly over his head.

I'm not afraid to admit, yes it did fly over!

Anyway, I got stuck at work 'til 08:00 this morning and only had time to mount the pump on the frame. I hate the short days of winter and "Daylight Saving Time". They should call it "Daylight Wasting Time".

Hope to do some testing and hook up the pump tomorrow.

Update

The problem has been resolved. After installing the DDRP from Geno's the truck is back up and running better than ever. ****I have some pics if anyone is interested.****

I did a flow test on the old pump and it only flowed 1/2 quart after bumping the starter. The pump hadn't completely failed and this is probably why the truck would idle just fine.

One thing I noticed while driving is the valve train noise has gone away while cruising. Anyone have any ideas on that?...Would this have to do with fuel pressure at the rail?

Not so much valve train noise as it is injector rattle. Starve the CP3 for fuel (doesn't take much) and it starves the injectors. Something that will lead to short injector life.

I'm not so sure. I was getting fan speed codes on a regular basis until I replaced my lift pump. Now, no more codes. Haven't had one since.

Could be a coincidence but who knows?
